Nokia Asha SDK 1.1 graduated today from beta status, bringing Share and VoIP APIs to Asha developers. If you’ve been working with the beta SDK you know how easy it is to build apps that share content with popular social media services like Twitter and Facebook. Among other tasks the SDK handles the complexities of OAuth 2.0 authentication. The SDK also supports the new VoIP API including emulation.
If you have been waiting for the final release of Asha SDK 1.1, wait no longer:
With more than one billion users accessing the Internet on mobile devices worldwide, both phone manufacturers and app developers have begun asking themselves the question, ‘Where will the next billion come from?’ The answer can be found in emerging markets like South and Central America, Asia-Pacific and Africa. It’s estimated that of the projected 8.2 billion mobile connections in 2017, 61% of new growth will be from the Asia-Pacific region alone. One developer, Blue Lion Mobile, has already started tapping into these emerging markets with its Java-based app, Qeep, a social gaming entertainment application where millions of users from across the globe play games, chat, send pictures, make friends and more via their feature phones.
More than 1,000 apps were submitted to Nokia Developer’s Asha Developer Competition from nearly 500 developers worldwide, and today the winning apps are revealed.
Developers were encouraged to submit either Java or web apps for use with Asha Touch and Asha 501 devices in any of four categories: Games, Utilities & Productivity, Music & Entertainment, and News & Information. In addition, special prizes were offered for the Best User Experience, Best Web App, and Best New Idea.
For each of these categories, the developer of the winning app will get 25,000 euros, second prize 15,000 euros and 10,000 euros for third prize. For the special prizes, the winners will receive 10,000 euros.
Congratulations to Nokia Developer webinar participants who won cool Asha phones in our Learn and Win sweepstakes. Each of our winners registered for and attended a Nokia Developer webinar live or on demand, and used what they learned to correctly answer a question in a follow-up survey.
Giovanna Pavarani, a Nokia Developer member from Italy and one of our winners, summed up the feelings of many of our winners when she said WWWOOOAAAA!!!!! )))) Thank _you_! It’s nice to win a prize for learning
Charles Surles, Octacore, and wesee each won Asha phones for their participation in April Nokia Developer webinar sessions. @rgunawans scored a Nokia BH-211 headset. Colorful Asha t-shirts were awarded to Johan Sulistiyan, Kapila Nissanka, Giovanna Pavarani, and Mikko Vartiainen (@mvarti).
Winners from our May webinars introducing the new Nokia Asha software platform each walk away with an “elegant and clean Nokia Asha 501” as developer Ventsislav Ivanov (@venvenven) puts it. Each of our May series winners will also receive a USB stick full of developer tools. When Asha 501 phones begin shipping our winners will be among the first to own this great new phone. In some cases our winners may even have their Asha 501 before they’re available to consumers in their country. Congratulations to Ventsislav Ivanov (@venvenven), Vagrant Games, Pochi Mak, Roselle Wednesday Gardon and Maurilio Silva (@TK2k).
We’ve been having a lot of fun lately—we launched the Nokia Premium Developer Program for Lumia back in October, and it proved to be our most successful developer program ever. Our rewards program, DVLUP, has also proven extremely popular with developers, and we recently expanded it to include developers in the UK.
It’s time to wrap up some apps and get them ready for the holidays!
The HO HO! X-mas Hackathon is a two-day event for Windows 8, Windows Phone 8, and Nokia Asha app creation. There will be consultations with Nokia and Microsoft experts, presentations about Windows 8, Windows Phone 8, and Asha development, and, most importantly, plenty of time to hack. Have an app on another platform? Port it to Windows or Series 40. Or start from scratch and build something great for the season and beyond.
There will be Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 tracks in Turku, Tampere, and Oulu, andt he Tampere event will have an additional track covering the Series 40/Asha Java apps. Series 40 is the most widely used mobile platform in the world. The latest full touch Series 40 phones bring a smartphone experience to the mass market, complementing the range of Series 40 phones that deliver many mobile consumers their first internet experience.
