If you only publish your Windows Phone app in English, you’re neglecting 75% of your potential users. English-only apps reach about 25% of Windows Phone users in their native language. Adding Chinese (simplified) and Spanish more than doubles your potential to about 60%. Add Russian, Italian, Portuguese, and French to cover the overwhelming majority of all Windows Phone users.

Mini Missions 1 & 2 winners announced
After many long and enjoyable nights reviewing your submissions, we’re happy to announce the winners for the Nokia Create Mini Missions 1 and 2. Mini Mission 1 challenged you to add new features to existing apps using the Nokia Imaging SDK. Mini Mission 2 offered prizes to the best additions of NFC functionality to an existing app.

At our Nokia World event today in Abu Dhabi, we introduced a number of new phones, including three large-screen devices to our Lumia family and three new Nokia Asha devices, $5 million USD in rewards available through our DVLUP rewards program, and introduced Nokia Developer Offers.
New big-screen Lumias
As part of today’s announcement, the Nokia Lumia family has grown in numbers and in size with the addition of the Nokia Lumia 2520, the first Windows 8.1 RT tablet from Nokia. At the same time we have introduced two new devices with 6” displays: the Nokia Lumia 1520 with 1080p resolution, and Nokia Lumia 1320 with 720p resolution.
With more than one billion users accessing the Internet on mobile devices worldwide, both phone manufacturers and app developers have begun asking themselves the question, ‘Where will the next billion come from?’ The answer can be found in emerging markets like South and Central America, Asia-Pacific and Africa. It’s estimated that of the projected 8.2 billion mobile connections in 2017, 61% of new growth will be from the Asia-Pacific region alone. One developer, Blue Lion Mobile, has already started tapping into these emerging markets with its Java-based app, Qeep, a social gaming entertainment application where millions of users from across the globe play games, chat, send pictures, make friends and more via their feature phones.
More than 1,000 apps were submitted to Nokia Developer’s Asha Developer Competition from nearly 500 developers worldwide, and today the winning apps are revealed.
Developers were encouraged to submit either Java or web apps for use with Asha Touch and Asha 501 devices in any of four categories: Games, Utilities & Productivity, Music & Entertainment, and News & Information. In addition, special prizes were offered for the Best User Experience, Best Web App, and Best New Idea.
For each of these categories, the developer of the winning app will get 25,000 euros, second prize 15,000 euros and 10,000 euros for third prize. For the special prizes, the winners will receive 10,000 euros.

DVLUP, Nokia’s rewards program for Windows Phone app developers, is shedding its “beta” label, and entering the next phase of its own development, opening its doors to members from more than 20 countries worldwide.
With a brand new look and feel, one of the biggest changes to DVLUP is the addition of a “Campaigns” feature. This new online tool makes it easy for Windows Phone app developers to create, book and manage marketing campaigns promoting their own apps on both a local and global level.
“For the first time, developers will have a transparent path for their app to get featured in app discovery and marketing channels,” said Chanse Arrington, Global Head of Developer Business Tools at Nokia. “We feel this is a big step in creating a truly participatory and fair app ecosystem, where developers are in complete control of their own success.”
With the growing business opportunities available on the Asha and Windows Phone platforms, we have been reviewing our developer content programs to see how we can maximize our support to you, our developers. As a result of this review, we have decided to focus our support and investment in new content toward Asha and Windows Phone. Over the next few months we will be transitioning our active developer support away from Symbian and MeeGo.
If you have Symbian and MeeGo content in the Nokia Store, it will continue to be available for download to customers, and you will continue to receive download and revenue reports as well as payouts for downloaded content. However, starting January 1, 2014, you will no longer be able to publish any new content or update existing content for Symbian and MeeGo.
The Symbian Signed program will also close on January 1, 2014. If you have any unused paid technical support tickets, you may use them for Windows Phone or Asha developer support.
We are very excited about the opportunities available with Asha and Windows Phone, and hope that you, our Symbian and MeeGo developers, will bring your talents to these platforms. We believe that these changes will help improve our ability to support you as you develop fantastic apps for your customers.

When we witness developer success, we want to share it with the community in the hope it will be a catalyst for others! Recently, Game Insight, developer and publisher of free-to-play games, saw its business grow with its first foray into developing games for Nokia devices and Windows Phone 8. Starting with city-builder My Country and role-playing adventure Rule the Kingdom, the company has already surpassed $500,000 in revenue from more than 700,000 Windows Phone 8 users this year.
So how did Moscow-based Game Insight experience such success with its first Windows Phone games? We asked Senior Business Development Vice President Darya Trushkina that question and she gave us a few insights:
Trushkina suggests creating high-quality content that keeps users engaged and doing so in a format that feels authentic to the region. Integral to this is customizing each game for each market, to make players feel that the experience was built specifically for them.
Lean on Nokia
Make use of regional Nokia developer teams (like Game Insight did in Russia and China), who may be able to provide marketing support, including prime spots in the Store, cross-promotion opportunities as well as social media support. They can also help with local market insights and feedback to help ensure an app is successful with consumers in the target market.
As a small developer, Game Insight found this hands-on approach from Nokia’s regional teams to be key to limiting marketing expenses and increasing each game’s overall revenues. Encouraged by the success of their first titles on Windows Phone, the company is now looking to replicate that success in additional markets across the globe as well as expand development for Windows Phone 8 and Nokia devices.
