What is the Nokia Premium Developer Program for Asha and why should I join?
The Nokia Premium Developer Program for Asha helps you succeed with full touch Asha by providing high-value support and tools that optimize and enhance your development efforts and improve the discoverability of your quality apps. By offering resources beyond what's provided by a standard registration with Nokia Developer, the Premium Developer Program for Asha fast-tracks your success.
What defines a full touch Asha app?
Full touch Asha apps are apps built for Nokia Series 40 Developer Platform 2.0 or Nokia Asha Platform 1.0 and published in Nokia Store.
What benefits are offered with the program?
The Asha Premium Developer Program comprises two levels of benefits: enhanced productivity tools, and app promotion opportunities.
Enhanced productivity tools include a free Nokia Asha smartphone (currently a Nokia Asha 310; the Nokia Asha 501 will be available later in the year as an option) to use for development; expanded Remote Device Access to test apps on a wide range of Nokia Asha devices; and 2 free tech tickets for Asha development support worth $198 (USD).
App promotional opportunities include greater visibility on Nokia Store; and a credit, worth $500 (USD), to run paid ad campaigns on Nokia Ad Exchange (NAX), a private mobile advertising exchange that gives you access to more than 120 ad networks worldwide.
Is the program open to anyone? What are the requirements to join?
The program is open to all experienced mobile app developers who have previously published at least two qualifying apps in a major mobile storefront (e.g., Nokia Store, Google Play, Apple App Store, or BlackBerry World). For applications to be considered qualifying they must be built in the native development environment applicable for the store or marketplace where they are published. Applications that merely contain a web launcher, shortcut or a web browser do not qualify.
In order to receive the promotional benefits, your app must meet additional requirements.
How much does it cost to join the Asha Premium Developer Program?
There is no fee required to join the program.
How long is program membership and do I need to renew?
Program membership lasts for one year from when you join, and yes, you will need to renew your membership in order to continue to receive benefits after the first year.
How can I join the Asha Premium Developer Program and how do I receive my benefits?
You can apply at the Asha Premium Developer Program main page, where you will be given additional information on how you can receive your benefits if your application is successful and you are admitted to the program.
How is this program different from Nokia's other developer programs, such as Nokia Premium Developer Program for Lumia,
and Nokia Champions?
The Asha Premium Developer Program provides benefits for developers of full touch Asha apps published in the Nokia Store. The Nokia Premium Developer Program for Lumia, (formerly known simply as the Nokia Premium Developer Program) is for Windows Phone development. Both programs are designed to help you succeed on Nokia platforms and provide benefits beyond what's provided via regular Nokia Developer registration, but requirements and benefits are tailored for each platform. Nokia Champions is a program for exceptional Nokia developers (Asha or Lumia) who have made and continue to make significant contributions to the Nokia developer community.
Can I be a member of more than one Nokia Developer program?
Yes, of course! Requirements to join each program are different, however.
Why is the Asha Premium Developer Program free while it costs $99 USD to join the Lumia Premium Developer Program? Is this
program for Asha less valuable than the program for Lumia?
We determine how each program is priced depending on the particular benefits that are offered as part of the membership (productivity tools, monetization/promotional opportunities, special 3rd-party tools partner promotions, etc.). Since these are different for each program and may change over time, we advise you to participate in the program that best meets your development platform interests and where you can derive the maximum value for your needs.
How can I get in touch if I have any questions about the Program?
Send an email to Asha.firstname.lastname@example.org.
How will you verify that I have really developed the two apps that I submit as part of my registration for program membership?
We ask several questions (e.g., your publisher name, publisher ID, names and URL links to two or your published apps, and your publisher email address). These are then checked in detail. And if there are any discrepancies (e.g., domain name of your email doesn't match that of the publisher name), then we will ask you for additional information.
For example, for non-Nokia Store apps, we may request a screenshot of you logged into your developer account (with the publisher name visible).
Do I need to register using the same email address that I used when publishing the apps?
Can the two links be for the same app but on different platforms?
What if all my applications are already available on full touch Asha devices, can I not join the program?
You can still join the program by filling out the application form online and supplying links to two apps that you have published in Nokia Store. In order to apply for promotion benefits (Nokia-paid NAX credits or Nokia Store promotion), you must complete a new full touch Asha app that has been published after joining the program and submit its URL link in the Nokia Store.
I haven't published any apps yet but I'm interested in starting with Asha. Can I not join the program?
You can still download any Java SDKs and necessary tools from the Nokia developer website to get started with Asha. However, in order to apply for Asha Premium Developer Program membership, you must supply URL links to two published mobile apps from a major storefront.
How long will it take until I know if my registration has been approved or not?
If you have supplied all requested information, it should be no more than five working days for your registration to be either approved or rejected. If additional information or clarification of the information is required, then this process may take longer.
If my submission gets rejected, who can I talk to if I think there was a mistake made?
If you believe your application should have been accepted, you can send an email to Asha.Developer@Nokia.com with the specific reasons.
If my submission gets rejected, can I reapply again any time?
Rather than reapply, it is best to supply additional information or clarification of your information as requested in the email that was sent to you, or send email to Asha.Developer@Nokia.com.
Can I apply and be accepted more than once to Asha Premium Developer Program?
No, you can only have one active membership in the program.
I have been accepted to the program. How do I get NAX credits or Nokia Store promotion for my apps?
To be able to access the promotional benefits, you need to submit a new, full touch Asha app to Nokia Store. The app must be published to Nokia Store after joining the Asha program and during your membership year.
How many times can I benefit from these promotion opportunities?
If you develop a Java or web app for any full touch Nokia Asha device (Asha 305 to 311; or Asha 501) you will be entitled to one promotional benefit, either NAX credit or Nokia Store promotion. You can use the same app to apply for both the Nokia Store promotion or NAX ad credit. But you can only be granted either a NAX ad credit or Nokia Store promotion.
In 2013, if you develop or optimize an additional Java app for Nokia Asha 501 you will be entitled to an additional promotional benefit, either NAX credit or Nokia Store promotion. You can use the same app to apply for both the Nokia Store promotion or NAX ad credit. But you can only be granted either a NAX ad credit or Nokia Store promotion. There is no additional promotional benefit for additional web apps.
This means in 2013 you can get a maximum of two promotion benefits in total: one for a Java or web app for any full touch Asha; another for an additional Java app for Nokia Asha 501.
How often can I apply for promotion benefits?
In general, the account owner of each publisher company can apply for NAX ad credit or Nokia Store promotion only once per calendar quarter.
However, in 2013, you can apply a maximum of two times per calendar quarter: once for a new app for any full touch Asha smartphone, and a second one for an additional Java app for Asha 501.
Is there anything I can do in order to increase my chances of being promoted?
Make sure that your app meets all of the minimum requirements to be eligible for promotion benefits. If you have a great app, that helps increase your chances. Some things that are indicative of great apps are that they are engaging, have high quality graphics and UI, and really delight the user.
What do I need to do in order to get my free device?
You must apply and be accepted into the program before you are able to request your free device via the program service portal. Only the account owner of a publisher company can request a free device. Only one free device will be available per membership year.
What if I have already requested and received an Asha 310. Can I also request an Asha 501?
No, if you have already received your free device for your membership year, you can't request another one. Keep an eye on the Asha Developer Competition; you may be able to get an Asha 501 if you participate!
Should I wait until my choice of development device is available before ordering it?
As noted in the Asha Premium Developer Program Terms and Conditions, device quantities are limited, and there is no guarantee that a particular device type will be available by the time that you place your order.
When will I get my free device?
Because of the popularity of the program, the current shipment timeframe is 4-6 weeks. It will not be possible to give specific dates for your order.
Will I be charged any fees or handling charges for my free device?
No, you should not be required to pay any fees or taxes on the delivery. If the person making the delivery indicates that taxes or fees are due, please contact us at email@example.com
Will I get a new device every year?
The current Asha Premium Developer Program benefits include a free device. In the future, there may be new or additional benefits that will be available as part of the membership renewal process. You will be notified later concerning any updates to program benefits and the renewal process.
Do I need to return the device when my membership expires?
If you publish a new, full touch Asha app in the Nokia Store after you've joined the Asha Premium Developer Program and within 6 months of receiving the device, then it is not necessary to return the device. The app must meet certain requirements, as described in the Terms and Conditions for the program.
Do I need to apply for Nokia Store promotion or NAX ad credit in order not to have to return the device?
If you publish a new full touch Asha app in Nokia Store after you've joined Asha Premium Developer Program and within 6 months of receiving the device, then it is not necessary to return the device. Applying for NAX ad credit or Nokia Store promotion is optional.
What if the device malfunctions (by itself without any external influence)? Is there a warranty?
Send an email to DAS@nokia.com with your name, address and a description of the problem you're having with the device. If the problem falls under warranty, we'll send you a replacement device and return envelope for the defective one.
The Terms and Conditions say that I need to return the device if I don't publish an app after 6 months. Do I need to prove
that I did publish the app within timeframe? What if I publish it but after 6 months?
We will contact you regarding the return of the device, payment, and shipment method if we determine that you have not published a full touch Asha app in the Nokia Store within 6 months.
Where would I need to return the device?
Nokia Tampere Device Access Services
What if I break the device or lose it and can't return it?
The Asha Premium Developer Program Terms and Conditions (which need to be accepted as part of the membership application) specify that there will be a damages assessment cost to be determined by Nokia for damaged devices. You will be billed for this cost, not to exceed the retail price of the Asha smartphone you received as determined at the time of assessment.
What is RDA?
Remote Device Access (RDA) is a service that allows you to test your mobile applications and services remotely on various Nokia devices. Application testing in RDA is a natural extension for development and testing done with an SDK and emulator. Development done for one device can now easily be tested with different devices in RDA. You can find more information about RDA here.
How is Expanded RDA different from the RDA that all Nokia developers have access to? And is this only for full touch Asha
As an Asha Premium Developer Program member, you get Expanded Remote Device Access (RDA), meaning that you are able to test your mobile applications and services remotely on an expanded (greater) number of Nokia Asha devices, only. The types of Asha devices currently include: Asha 308, Asha 309, Asha 310, and Asha 311. Support for the Asha 501 is planned for later in the year.
How does RDA work and what do I need to do to book a device?
All developers with a Nokia Developer account can access the RDA service. Access to additional Asha Premium Developer Program devices will happen automatically when you have been accepted to the program. Additional information about how to use the service can be found on the RDA website and the service itself. If you still have additional questions, please send them to NDH.FI@nokia.com.
I see I get two free tech support tickets with my membership. What can I use them for?
You can use them to ask technical questions about development for Asha or other Nokia devices. There is also a Nokia community forum, where many common development questions are answered by the community, free of charge.
When and how will I get my tickets?
The tickets will appear as a tab in the Support Center when you log into your Asha Premium Developer account.
What kind of response time can I expect with my tech support tickets?
This depends greatly on the number of simultaneous requests we receive, but typical response time is one to five business days.
If I use my two tickets, can I buy more?
Yes, you may. The cost for each additional ticket is $99 (USD).
When my membership expires, what happens to my tickets? Do I get 2 new tickets every year if I renew my membership? Do I
need to request them anywhere?
The current Asha Premium Developer Program benefits include two support tickets. In the future, there may be new or additional benefits that will be available as part of the membership renewal process. You will be notified later concerning any updates to program benefits and the renewal process.
I already paid for a tech support ticket, but haven't used it. What happens to that ticket?
Your existing tickets will be good for another six months. But after that, they will expire.
What are the requirements to apply for NAX credit?
Please see the section about accessing promotion benefits for more information.
What is the Nokia-paid NAX Ad credit and how does it work?
Nokia Ad Exchange (NAX) is a private mobile advertising exchange offering access to the top ad networks in the world. NAX ad credit is a benefit that Asha Premium Developers members can apply for by submitting a new full touch Asha app that meets minimum requirements.
If you are granted this $500 NAX ad credit promotion opportunity can use it to advertise your apps within other developers' apps in order to increase the visibility of your app.
How often do you give out NAX credit?
NAX credits are not given out on a pre-determined schedule, but are given to developers with apps that meet the minimum requirements and other Nokia Store criteria in the order that they are submitted.
How will you inform me if I've been given NAX credit and how do I receive it?
You will be notified if you are awarded NAX ad credits via email. You will be given a URL where you must register and define your ad campaign to showcase your app within 60 days or forfeit this ad credit.
If a publisher has already received Nokia Store promotion for that membership year, then they cannot also receive a NAX ad credit during the same membership year.
Can I use the credit on different apps or just for one app? One campaign or split into multiple campaigns?
The NAX ad credit can be used on just one app (the one that is used to apply for promotion) on a single campaign.
I don't use NAX. Can I get credit for a different ad network or can I get the money in cash instead?
If you don't use NAX, then it is best to apply for Nokia Store promotion instead. You will not be given credit for a different ad network and cannot receive the money in cash.
Can I still use NAX and run campaigns, even if I don't get credit?
Yes. You can go to http://nax.nokia.com to get more information, register for NAX and download the SDK and modify your app in order to serve ads within your app using NAX. You may also run what's called a "house campaign", where you can advertise your app or your website within your own apps for free.
What are the requirements to apply for Nokia Store promotion?
Please see the section about accessing promotion benefits for more information.
What is the Nokia Store promotion benefit and where will the promotion be?
You can apply for the opportunity to be granted Nokia Store promotion, which enables your app to be promoted in one of several different placement slots (Featured app, App Category, App Spotlights, or Collections) within Nokia Store only.
Will the promotion be global or local? If local, in what countries?
If the app is in English, it is eligible for global promotion. If the app is in a language other than English, then the app is eligible for promotion locally in countries that have access to the Nokia Store and that are appropriate for that language.
For example, an app in Spanish may be promoted in countries where there are country-specific Nokia stores whose primary language is Spanish.
How long will the promotion last?
The app will be promoted for a length that is determined by the Nokia Store personnel. Some exceptional apps may be promoted longer than the default one week, depending on its rating, number of downloads and other app performance indicators that result from Nokia Store promotion.
My rating for my app keeps on changing. How often can I submit the same app for promotion?
Make sure before submitting your app for consideration that it meets the minimum 4 stars rating. If the rating drops after you have submitted the app, and you receive a rejection email from us, then you may later re-apply only one more time with the same app, if the app later achieves a minimum rating of 4 stars.
Can I pick the app I'd like you to promote?
After joining the program, apply for Nokia Store promotion with a new full touch Asha app that you'd like to see promoted. If it is selected, it will be promoted. You may not substitute any other app for promotion in its place.
Can you promote my Windows Phone or Symbian app instead?
No. As an Asha Premium Developer, you can only get promotion for your full touch Asha apps.
Can I decide how, when, and where I'd like you to promote my app?
No, the Nokia Store personnel will decide how your app will be promoted. Examples include Featured app, Categories, App Spotlights, or Collections. It will also decide when it will be promoted and for how long. Depending on the language that the app is in, it may be promoted regionally or globally (see question above).
You will be notified via email if your app has been approved for promotion, but you will not be notified in advance of how, when, and where the promotion will take place. But, you can use your dashboard analytics tool to monitor the effect of the promotion on the number of app downloads or increased revenue.
How will you get in touch if you decide to promote my app?
If your app is selected for Nokia Store promotion, then you will be notified via email.
Do I need to provide any assets for you to promote my app?
You need to submit your promotional assets (for mobile and desktop banners) if you want your app to be considered for App Spotlights promotion. Go to the following URL and submit your assets before applying for Nokia Store or NAX ad credits: http://snac.nokia.com/2/pages/omthome
Can developers who are not part of this program also get their apps promoted?
Yes, developers who are not part of the program can also get their apps promoted in the Nokia Store. However, to increase your chances and to get a response (one way or another), it is recommended that you join this program.
