Operators

Mainland China, whose population is about 1.3 billion, has two major mobile operators: China Mobile (CMCC) and China Unicom (CU). While there is a push to sign up new subscribers in rural areas using lower-end devices, the S60 platform, developed by Nokia, accounts for 7 percent of all devices shipped, or more than 2 million devices per quarter. That means the market also supports users who are eager for feature-rich experiences.

  • CMCC: The world's largest mobile operator in terms of subscribers, CMCC serves 370 million subscribers (as of the fourth quarter of 2007) and is growing fast — 23 percent in 2007. Half of that growth is coming from rural areas. CMCC enjoys a 68 percent market share in China. Monternet is CMCC's mobile content brand. For more information, please visit the CMCC and Monternet Web sites.
  • CU: For more information, please visit the CU Web site.
