Operators

The region comprising Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) hosts about 1.2 billion mobile subscribers. Of these, about 860 million are in Europe.

The EMEA market is characterized by the presence of many of the world's largest mobile operators, which seek to maintain their positions by:

  • Acquiring additional operations and subscribers in other regions of the world.
  • Driving the uptake of new and innovative mobile data services to offset flattening voice revenues in established markets.

Developers of innovative mobile applications and services can rapidly extend their market reach through partnerships with the following players, which have ready made distribution capabilities available:

  • Orange: Orange, part of France Telecom, has 109.7 million mobile subscribers (as of December 2007) from operations in more than 30 countries around the world. Orange operates its own developer partner program, Orange Partner.


  • Vodafone: This operator has ownership interests in 25 countries and five continents and has a mobile subscriber base of 252.3 million (as of December 2007).   • Hutchison: Hutchison Whampoa operates its mobile telecommunications unit under the "3" brand and has 17.6 million subscribers (as of December 2007) from operations in multiple countries. It is a member of the Hutchison Whampoa Group, and its main operations are in the U.K., Italy, Hong Kong, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland, Norway, and Australia.   • Telefónica S.A.:This mobile operator, which originates in Spain, has 160 million mobile subscribers (as of September 2007) from operations in several Latin American countries, Asia, and several European nations (Spain, Germany, the U.K., Ireland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic).
