The mobile internet is an integral part of everyday life. Today, your customers expect to access your website while they're mobile, and it’s likely they'll be browsing from one of the estimated 1 billion Nokia mobile devices currently in use.

Nokia knows the web, and Nokia devices offer the same web technologies you're familiar with on PCs. These technologies enable you to mobilise your web resources with little or no additional design or development work. Just put in a little additional effort and your existing skills will enable you to deliver an optimised mobile-internet experience.

Within this web-technologies section, you'll find all the information you need to make the most of the mobile internet on Nokia devices.

Taking websites mobile

Nokia has taken PC style browsing mobile with the WebKit-based Web Browser for S60 and Web Browser for Series 40. These browsers allow mobile users to open and view their favourite websites just as they would on PCs. The unique features these browsers offer, such as wrapping text to a device’s screen width, makes mobile browsing of websites designed for the PC practical and enjoyable. In addition, Flash content can be viewed in the Web Browser for S60, enabling the maximum level of website accessibility. With 180 million devices that offer these browsers having been shipped as of June 2008, the web has never before been more accessible to mobile consumers.

Optimise to maximise

Although the WebKit-based S60 and Series 40 web browsers enable mobile users to easily access almost any website, that access doesn’t guarantee that consumers will browse your website from their mobile devices. Browsing behaviour is different in the mobile environment, which means most sites can benefit from optimisation. Mobile internet sessions are more focused, with the user looking for specific information. Sites that are successful with mobile users are those that make sure the right information is presented well and can be found easily. In many cases, achieving this requires very little modification to a website’s design. For some content management systems (CMSs), there are server side plug-ins that can reformat content for display on mobile devices.

Web to the max

Make your web experience available to users with one click from the S60 UI with Web Runtime (WRT) widgets. WRT widgets are small applications created using standard web technologies. These are the same technologies you used to develop your website, but they are packaged and installed to deliver mobile web experiences just like native applications, enabling mobile users to access your site with a single click in a device’s UI.

WRT widgets have other benefits too. They enable tighter optimisation to a device’s screen size and interaction methods, making your information easier to find and use. On selected S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2 and all S60 5th Edition devices from Nokia, you also can access device data such as contacts and location. Starting with the Nokia N97 mobile computer, you can also add a view into your widget to the device home screen. By using the Nokia Platform Services 2.0 beta JavaScript API, gaining this access involves writing only one or two lines of JavaScript code.

Forum Nokia now offers a range of tools that simplify the process of creating WRT widgets in Aptana Studio, Adobe Dreamweaver, and Microsoft Visual Studio.

The mobile, personal internet

Nokia is already driving the next internet revolution with S60 Platform Services integration. This revolution goes beyond ‘access anywhere’ to ‘aware access’: an internet that knows where you are and what you want. Nokia is transforming the internet into your internet.

WRT widgets on the latest S60 devices can, with the user’s permission, determine a device’s location and use this information to adapt the widget’s content. With this technology, users can, for example, open their favourite dining WRT widget to see the nearest restaurant and a list of today’s specials. This technology isn't limited to location: Users can share all manner of device information with trusted websites. The possibilities for enhancing internet experiences are endless and will help users in their everyday lives, keeping them closer to the people and things they care about most.

Content in a Flash

For web developers who have used Flash to offer dynamic and interactive multimedia on their web sites, the integration of the Flash Lite 3.0 Player with the S60 and Series 40 web browsers now enables Flash content to be part of any mobile-optimised web site.

Web developers can also leverage Flash Lite from Adobe to create standalone applications and content for S60 and Series 40 devices. Flash Lite has great online data-connection options, now extended with streaming movie playback — making it one of the most exciting delivery platforms for data and services.

Serving the web from mobile platforms

The mobile web is about more than simply browsing the web. S60 devices can also serve the web with Mobile Web Server. Mobile Web Server enables users to access device information via their PC web browser and serve web pages from personal URLs.
