Capture Hackathon-winning apps available now in Windows Phone Store

Smart Resize isn’t your average image resizing app, any more than developers Rudi Chen and Shida Li are your average university students. These friends and students at the University at Waterloo in Canada scored top honors in this summer’s Nokia Capture hackathon in Lund, Sweden. You can now download their Smart Resize app from Windows Phone Store and see for yourself what impressed everyone last week when we showcased their app during Nokia World in Abu Dhabi.
Using what the developers describe as a “content-aware scale algorithm” the Smart Resize app differentiates between the most important and less important parts of your picture so you can remove the stuff you don’t want while leaving the main subjects perfectly intact, at the proper size. Check out this video of the app in action:
The winning developers share their thoughts in this extended version:
The first two runners-up in the Nokia Capture contest are also available in Windows Phone Store:
- Social Scene by Jason Podwojski of geoLog UK redefines the way we think about time-lapse photography, and gives you a new way to share the world around you. Take a picture of a scene, and then see how others contribute to it later on, creating a long-term time-lapse view of that place.
- TapShoot by South African developer and Nokia Developer Champion Matt Cavanagh of RogueCode makes it possible for you to connect two Windows Phones together, and use one to control the camera of the other. This free app uses Bluetooth and NFC functionality on your Lumia to connect the phones together, and then captures the picture seen by the second device. You can even select from a variety of image filters to make your picture look even better.
You can check out all of the new imaging apps that were produced during the Nokia Capture event in this App Social collection.
Each of these developers won expense-paid trips to Lund, Sweden to participate in the Nokia Capture hackathon and the winning apps are now getting promoted big time.
