MSc Project Ideas - Ad Hoc networks

    Hi all,
I'm coming up with ideas for my MSc project. The idea is to try to create a peer 2 peer ad hoc network system, which would transfer distributed user generated information between devices. What this information is is yet to be decided (and the reason for this post!).

One idea so far is a system which would work with cyclists. It assumes that cyclists know their local area well and know the best routes to cycle, and so they could log their routes with GPS. When their (java based) devices comes into range of another person's device they can exchange route information. This means that when someone is outside of their local area they could call upon the knowledge of the local cyclists to choose the best, and safest, cycling routes.

The problems for this as an MSc project is that we don't have the GPS equipment and enough cyclists (we'd need loads!) to make the project tractable.

So, what kinda of user generated information could people suggest would be useful in this sort of system? What would you find useful?

    Thanks in advance

    Regards
    Stu

P.S. technical questions to following in future months:P

well there can be number of things like.

i dont like bumpy roads and i also dont like going up the hill very much so that can be useful information.

Also the amount of traffic on the road like if its a busy road then i would rather go to a quite place or place where amount of traffic is reasonable.

Strange to read such comments on ad Hoc networks, being getting information about traffic information using ad hoc networks

Before going into the depth of Ad HOC networks, First in which way you will define the range of devices. Using GPS System then why not from central sever if you have GPS devices.

Actually I can not get your point of establishing ad Hoc networks using mobile devices.

My vote for information would be (from a point of view of a cyclist)

    1. I would want to do the road which climbs the least and has most of downwards journey(a major plus if you bicycle for transportation and not exercise really..of course exercise comes as bonus!!)
    2. Lesser heavy traffic is preferable
    3. Accessibility(which is more or less there unless its a heavy loaded jungle)
    4. Preferable route should have better roads than others.

    Hope it helps..
    Good Luck and Cheers

Thanks for the responses guys. All good info there, I'm working on getting some GPS devices, but I think that it's quite unlikely.

Thanks for the cyclist info suggestions. Does anyone have any suggestions for idea completely unrelated to cyclists? For example, a user generated restaurant guide, or coffee shop guide (although this would also need location info). A suggestion I've had is a night planner, so you can plan which bars/club you want to go to based on what the collective public think.

With regards to the ad hoc network, I'm inclined to agree. I've been thinking about it, and there could be problems with forming bluetooth networks (e.g. have to be close to each other for a decent amount of time). It might be that a central db is used, with data sent over the phone's data connnection (could be expensive in user testing. hmm).

Anyways, thanks for the responses. All helpful stuff
