    Hi ,

My application work fine on the emulator.
When I create the sis file and sign it, then I try to install it on the phone, I get an error message "Update Error".
Can any one help? I don't really know what's the error and where is it comming from.

    hi,

the update error will usually get if the sis file is already there in the phone memory.
try to delete the sis from folder sys/bin going through file browser.

And how to go inside sys/bin !!!?

From 3rd edition onwards /sys is not accessible to non-TCB programs.
For more information refer to the "Data Caging" in the SDK help.

However you can uninstall applications from Application Manager on your phone.

Thanks every body, I solved my problem by formating my phone.

Some of the common reason for this error:

    1. After the installation of YourApp.SIS, change the UID3 of YourApp and try to install again with out uninstalling the previously installed YourApp.

    2. If YourApp.SIS is trying to install SomeFile.ext which has been already installed by OtherApp.SIS will make a name conflict and leads to this error.

    Re: UPdate Error! while installation

i think I'm having the same problem, see thread http://discussion.forum.nokia.com/fo...d.php?t=105080. And yes my updated SIS file (v1.2) contains same files as v1.1, any ideas how to solve the problem? I guess it is very common that later versions will contain same files (or at least file names will be the same).

    regards,
    M.

    Hello,

Major changes in resource file may also lead to such problem. i.e. .rsc
We can keep SomeFile.ext in \private\<SID of the executable>\ to avoid such errors.

It is better practice to uninstall the app before reinstalling rather than replacing existing one.

Exclamation Re: UPdate Error! while installation

    Just a little note:
The files most often shared between 2 or more different applications are, actually, DLLs so you should check if your application is trying to copy a DLL to phone and then check if some other application already coppied the same DLL.
The only solution I see (at this point) is for you to uninstall the first application and then install the one that couldn't be installed before (the one that was reporting "Update error!").
    Cheers, elgrande!

Is there any other solutions other than this? My problem is with the .dll, and i get this error when i try to install two applications using the same .dll. Is there a posibility of having both the applications installed?

    Re: UPdate Error! while installation

You can do a conditional install. Something like
    Code:
    if not package(0x2000xxxx)
    "\Symbian\9.1\S60_3rd_MR\epoc32\release\GCCE\UDEB\xxx.dll"-"C:\Sys\bin\xxx.dll"
    endif
If the installer crashes sometimes you get a partial install left on the phone. In this case you can't uninstall it and you can't install a good sis over the top because some of the files are already there. One solution is to reformat the phone. Another is to have a blank sis (with no files). Install that, then you should be able to uninstall and/or reinstall.
Don't ask me exactly what is going on, but it seems to work.

Have you tried what happens if you put the .dll-s into an embedded .sis file?

    Re: UPdate Error! while installation

Update error means that your package is trying to overwrite a file deployed by a package with an other UID. So it is about the UID in your .pkg file.
