    3D Game engine for MIDP/M3G

    Hi.
I'm looking for an 3D Game Engine to make my 3D game for MIDP.
It'll be an FPS game, but in the future a will also make some racing games.
Are there any 3D game engines i could use or i should begin from scratch?
In there are somem could you recommend me the best engines? What engine should be the best for me?

Re: 3D Game engine for MIDP/M3G

It totally depends on the special effects you want to use in your game and amount of time you are willing to spend on implementing these effects.

The main advantage of any 3D engine is skipping hidden (to the player) parts of the scene, and drawing only these which are visible. Another big thing is implementing physics and collision logic, which are requiring additional code in engine.

If you are going to implement a few levels in the game, then level details and 3D information must be somehow packaged. This isn't a trivial task even for PC-games, and as far as I know, it is not commonly solved in 3D Java.

However, nothing is impossible. For simple scenes you can use your own engine, but as the complexity will grow, you'll need some improvements on your 3D engine.

Anyway, there are some good examples.

    Take a look at this Nokia's 3D example: http://www.forum.nokia.com/info/sw.n..._0_en.zip.html

I don't want to spend much time on implementing engine. My goal is to use ready made engine which has graphical rendering, manager the game, the images, input, output, and general functions like AI, collision detection and other rendering facilities. I want to focus only on my game.
Thanks for links you send. Are both this engines based on m3g API?

I'm not sure that the last one is based on m3g API. In case of utilizing such advanced engine, the solutions might be on the Symbian's or PocketPC's side.

Unfortunatelly Symbian is not solution for me. I have a phone with java and m3g. I just found such a project https://m3ge.dev.java.net/
    What you think?

I would like to bring this thread back, to know if you guys have any news about that.

I developed this ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFJr413vL0E ) demo using only m3g and trigonometry. I really need a physics engine to improve my game.

It's pretty good! My Q is how many triangles do you have there?

I ask because I've implemented a simple 3D stuff in M3G before. On small 320x240 screens it run well ( 20-25 fps ) but when I moved up to S60 5th edition ( 640x360 resolution ) I couldn't get it to run any faster than 13-14 FPS, which is barely playable. And that was just 108 triangles!

    Hello Utumno,

the car has 1100 triangles. I'm using Nokia N95 and it has a GPU to improve the 3D graphics.

So, since 2007 there is no evolution on M3G technology?

I found edgelib engine for Symbian C++, but it doesn't have a physics engine too.

Ok, I'll build such engine from scratch.
