    Wifi in Java!

    Hi,

Does anybody know if there is any api (jsr) to manage wifi in j2me? I'm trying to develop an application that detects whether there is a wifi network available or not, and makes a http request.

    thanks in advance.
    Benji.

Nope. On S60 devices the MIDlet uses what ever access point the user selects from the list displayed by the system. There is no WiFi control mechanisms in Java ME.

    Re: Wifi in Java!

If the user chooses to use WiFi connection for the MIDlet, then of course the MIDlet can connect through WiFi.

Also on certain S60 phones there is IAP Info APi available
    http://library.forum.nokia.com/topic...w-summary.html
which allos the MIDlet to have some sort of a control over the access point used.
It is available starting S60 3rd Edition FP2

    Re: Wifi in Java!

those specific persons are using a E71, which is a S60 device...
On a s60 device you can (as a user, not as a developer) specifiy which acces points (or wifi) the application should use to connect to the internet... This can be done through the Application Manager part of the S60 devices...
S40 devices just use the standard acces point (so it's not possible to set different access points for different applications)...

The little information that a developer can get has been explained by Hartti...

    Re: Wifi in Java!

you want to do it over 2 pcs or 2 mobile phones - code will independent of the actual transport layer - which may be LAN or Wifi or WAN or internet - you just need to go with implementing your video streaming protocol over the socket/TCP connection.

    Re: Wifi in Java!

Hermanthss, if you're asking about making connections between two PCs, using PC software, then this is not the right place. This about writing Java messaging applications for (Nokia's) mobile phones that support Java.

If you are developing your PC to PC app using desktop Java, then try Oracle's Java support forums through www.oracle.com (nowadays, they require users to register, it seems, so I can't point you to the actual Java support forums there, I'm afraid, as I have not registered, and I'm not going to, either).
