    certificate help :( yet again

    hello

i've been reading a lot about self-signed certificates and a lot of people seem to know a lot about them and i was wondering if anyone can help me. i have a nokia n73 which runs s60 3rd edition, and when i created my theme .sis file and transfer to my phone, it says certificate may not be valid, expired,or phone clock settings incorrect.

the 2 solutions i've already read about on this forum is to use the cygwin program to create the key and cer file and the other to syncronise phone time and computer time

i've downloaded cygwin and created the .key and .cer file from that and it still doesn't work. i've also made my phone's time settings the same, earlier, and later than my computer's clock time.

i would really like to create my own themes!

i would really appreciate the help!

thank you very much for the quick reply

i followed your instructions and went to CMD.

it said 'makekeys' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file

it said the same thing with 'signsis'

do i have to do it off CMD or should i try doing it through cygwin

    Hi,

It means that you do not have 3rd MR SDK installed on your PC.
You can download it from : (2nd entry from download section) S60 Platform SDKs for Symbian OS, for C++

    Hi Steven.

It really seems like that as Kiran said.

but if you are only concerned with the themes, and not with the Core Development

you must try Carbide.ui S60 Theme Edition 3.1 for Symbian OS IDE.
It does every thing for you untill the theme is ready to be deployed on your device.
You need not any thing else.

Time is every thing, you must save it.

i am only interested in the theme creator. sorry for the misunderstanding kiran

and i already do have carbide.ui s60 theme edition 3.1

i created the key pairs (key + cert) through it. and when i transfer it to the phone it states the error message i mentioned.

so since i am only interested in the creation of themes would i still need the C++ platform you mentioned kiran?

No Steven, there is no need for SDK to use Carbide.ui
And If the Carbide.ui successfully created the theme.sis file with the key pairs u mentioned.
Then the problem could be in the unsynched DateTime of your PC and your Phone. you must make sure about the date time of the pc when u created the Key Pair (.key and .cer) files. because the certificate file contains the Validity Period of time. for example
Valid From: Wednesday, April 25, 2007 3:27:30 AM
Valid To: Thursday, April 24, 2008 3:27:30 AM
so when u install the theme on ur phone, on that time your phone's datetime must be lying in between the certificate validity period.
and certificate validity starts on the time when the key pair is created by the Carbide.ui

I think now u know better, what u have to do.
before creating theme in Carbide.ui its good to set ur computer's time just same as your phone's time, then u can install theme right after creating it.

    I hope it'll help u.

    Ohh dear.
There must be wrong with ur process.
It seams that certificate is created after the sis file, Carbide.ui doesn't act like this.
Carbide.ui always makes keypair or collects a keypair created already just before creating sis package. So it means keypair (.key & .cer) files are created before the sis file created.
This is not the case when you don't use Carbide.ui, instead you develop a theme or any other application using the S60 SDK, then it depends on you either u make keys first or create sis first. All the thing is to sign sis with the keys.
    I dont know how r u doing.
So as you are not with Core Development, and being with Carbide.ui
I m asuming your computer time is 2 minutes behind the Phone's time
e.g. Computer time is 10:56 PM and phone time is 10:58 PM
Now just following these steps you must not face the same error.
    1- Open Carbide.ui
2- Open the theme project that u have created already.
3- Go to Tools > Create New SIS-Package
4- Click Next and Choose the path where the sis file to go.
5- In Package Signing block select "Sign by" and click on Modify button next to the Key pair list box
6- In dialog "Handle Key Pairs" click button "New" and then click "Make keys"
7- A new dialog "Make Keys" will appear, fill up the required information, choose the key and certificate file paths as in my case
    "C:\Documents and Settings\khurram\new\keyfile.key" and
    "C:\Documents and Settings\khurram\new\cerfile.cer"
Give the password. and Click button "Generate" (this will take a few seconds)
8- Now you can see the keypair files are populated in "Handle Key Pairs" dialog
If not so, do it on ur own, choose the key and certificate filse which u have just created in previous step by clicking browse button again in my case these are
    "C:\Documents and Settings\khurram\new\keyfile.key" and
    "C:\Documents and Settings\khurram\new\cerfile.cer"
give the password u have set while making keys.
and give a Key Pair Name e.g. "KeyPair1". Click "Save", and then click "Close"
9- Now we are in first dialog "New SIS-Package". now select the KeyPair1 available in the list left to the Modify button. give the same password. Notice the path where the SIS file is going to be created.
    and Press Finish.

All done. you can guess now, which file is created first. ofcourse KeyPair files and after clicking Finish button the sis file is created, SIS package creation will take a few minutes depending on ur project size.

    I used Carbide.ui S60 Theme Edition 3.1
    It must work now.
If some other error occurs try any other example provided with the Carbide.ui

And i have same problem like steven_s I did exacly like bellskar explain and it's not work :|
    Nokia E50

Ok i find one way to make theme work @ least on my phone and for stevrn_s I suggest to search Google for "Step-to-step tutorial : HOW TO get a signed version" and follow that instruction - @ least will work for your IME(phone).
But I want to make work for all phones and I really don't get why that happening...
Time @ mine PC is similar with phone. I simply don't get... might reinstall system if no one can help(maybe reinstall will help).
And in app. manager>settings i have set Software installation-->ALL and online certif. check-->Off

Re: certificate help :( yet again

    Hi All
I want to say thanks to all of u
I got much practice just in start using carbide only because of your comments
because i was also having the same problem. Infact I have just joined this community to search for a solution
and I am very much glad that I have been able to do it.
I just chased the steps said by bellskar, and also set my time just as bellskar said.
I tried first with the example Greay Day, and got the sis file installed successfully on my phone. I am also using E50, I dont know if it works on other phones or not. but as I have some knowledge and read the help in carbide, It should work on all phoens with S60 3rd
but after that I tried with a new project and I got it on my phone without any problem now. I can not guess what could be the problem with others. but plz come back if you get ur themes ready.

Thanks a lot again. thank you bellskar for such a great detailed help.
    cheers.
