SIM Application Toolkit support by Nokia phones

I'm developing a Java SIM toolkit applet and I was wondering if anybody know of any documentation that lists the SIM toolkit features (MO SMS, CALL CONTROL) etc supported by each individual Nokia phone? The support appears to vary greatly from phone to phone.

I'm trying to get a list of Nokia phones that support the SIM Toolkit MT CALL event. So far I've tested the terminal profile of 8 Nokia phones (3220, 3310, 3410, 6020, 6100, 6230i, 6630, N70) and only the 6230i supports it.

I'm happy to share the Terminal Profiles I've collected if it helps anyone.

    Thanks,

    S.

Re: SIM Application Toolkit support by Nokia phones

Its not easy because so many technical specifications are involved but to start with you need to read

GSM 11.11 Specification of the Subscriber Identity Module - Mobile Equipment (SIM-ME) Interface
    http://www.3gpp.org/ftp/Specs/html-info/1111.htm

GSM 11.14 Specification of the SIM Application Toolkit (SAT) for the Subscriber Identity Module - Mobile Equipment (SIM-ME) interface
    http://www.3gpp.org/ftp/Specs/html-info/1114.htm

GSM 03.48 Security mechanisms for SIM application toolkit
    http://www.3gpp.org/ftp/Specs/html-info/0348.htm

Then the Java implementation of SAT
GSM 03.19 Subscriber Identity Module Application Programming Interface (SIM API) for Java Card
    http://www.3gpp.org/ftp/Specs/html-info/0319.htm

These just cover SIM cards, there are also related standards for USIM cards which are used in 3G/UMTS mobile phones.

SIM API for Java Card is a subset of the Java Card specs so you will need to go and read that
    http://java.sun.com/products/javacard/index.jsp

Then there is the Open Card/Global Platform which is used to install applications http://www.globalplatform.org/specif...ew.asp?id=card

Then once you've got your head around all of that there are the SMS specifcations and there are no free tools available. Gemplus now Gemalto used to have a trial version of GemXplore Developer but its no longer available for download.

Bladox have a cheaper SIM toolkit development kit but its not Java and doesn't work with a wide variety of SIM cards.

Then you will have to persuade an mobile operator/carrier to let you install your application on to their cards. This cannot be done without their co-operation so you will need a compelling reason (i.e. make them more money) for them to do this.

    Good luck!

    Hello SimDude,

I have some questions about SIM card and SMS.
I will be appreciate if you give me a few information regarding my questions.

Is it possible to send an APDU command directly to SIM by using SMS?

According to 3GPP TS 03.48, does the APDU command need to be constructed a command packet? And then, the command packet need to be constructed a SMS ?

    Regards, iisaint

    Hi SIMDude,

even one year and a half after your post, I would be very happy to share info with you about supported terminal profiles.

I just started working on SIM services development and it's a hard deal to find any info about handsets supporting this or that class of functionalities.

Currently, the only thing I can share with you is a list of handsets (mostly non-Nokia) supporting class 'E' (e.g. SCWS), that I retrieved on Gemalto dev forums:

    Benq-Siemens S68
    DBTEL D3
    Motorola A780
    Motorola E398
    Motorola V180
    Motorola MPX
    Motorola Razr V3
    Nokia 6280
    Panasonic GD67
    Siemens C55, S55
    Siemens M55
    Siemens C60
    Siemens S65
    Siemens AX72

If you have something concerning more basic functionalities (e.g. the ones you were talking about in your post), that would be great!

    Thank you and best regards

    Marco

    Hi mark_zonk!

I found your post here on Nokia forum, and found it very interesting. I have also been looking for mobile specifications of supported STK classes and similar things. Thanks for your list.

If you have any more experience or 'd like to share or discuss, please contact me. I am currently working on a thesis on SIM card applications.

I couldn't find your contact information anywhere but you can reach me at: mackeian "at" hotmail "dot" com,
then we can exchange email addresses.

    All the best,
    Marcus

This is a Sierra Wireless specific AT command, proprietary.
