Which device (model) is that, exactly?

Maybe you're trying on a model without JSR-75 support?

And additionally. Not all directories are accessible to MIDlets. Check this document for guidance

I have checked that document, and the sample midlet that nokia provides doesn't run correctly on my phone (Nokia 6265i) I get Access denied errors all over the place. Are there any permissions that must be set prior to allowing access to the Filesystem???

Some operators have more strict security policies for MIDlets (and File access might not be allowed). Can you check the application access for user data (press "options" and something like "application access" when you are in the application menu and the application in question is selected)?
