    Device support - S60 3rd ed.

    Hello,

From a developer standpoint, what mechanism ensures that an application developed for a particular platform, say S60 3rd ed., will function as expected across all 3rd ed. devices? I ask with special reference to screen size and how the application appears.

Would greatly appreciate a prompt response.

Developer can follow the guidelines given in the "S60 Platform: Scalable UI Support" document, found in the S60 SDKs.

Basically, developers should not hardcode screen sizes and rely on the Scalable UI APIs for calculating screen sizes, font sizes, check orientation (portrait vs landscape) and so on.

    Re: Device support - S60 3rd ed.

    Dear dcrocha,

A developer who had earlier confirmed proper functioning of an application-under-development on all S60 2nd/3rd ed. devices by ensuring proper testing on Nokia 6600 and E61 devices is now insisting on a considerable price rise on account of implementing 'scalable UI support'.

Could you please guess a rough estimate on the approximate effort to implement 'scalable UI support'?

Also, are there tools to test across all devices in a simulator environment?

    Wud appreciate a prompt response.

You can change the resolution and layout in the emulator and you should not need more complex testing environment. For testing on real devices you have the RDA service available.

As for how easy it is for adding scalable UI support to an application, it pretty much depends on the application's UI type. For Avkon based UIs it is as easy as pie. For more complex/customized UIs it gets more complicated...
