location through Cell ID few 100km wrong

    Hi

now that I have RaccoonOnMap working with CellID, I am traced south-east of Frankfurt, which is about 200km south of Duesseldorf, being is my real location.
    Latitude: 49.983795269841
    Longitude: 8.8602954126984
Above values are the ones that have been traced, and relate to the position near Frankfurt.
    Actual values should be roughly:
    Latitude: 51.250312132383236
    Longitude: 6.7902374267578125

Any idea where that comes from ?

I think this might be a bit wrong place to ask this, maybe you could try contacting the developer who made RaccoonOnMap, they propably have made a mistake on mapping CellID to the location.

    Hi Yucca

I thought we are in a discussion forum where RaccoonOnMap is also discussed, I saw also in another post that CellID for China was wrong and one guy (developer?) came back on this issue. That's why I ask here.
But if it's not the right location, I can also send an email.

    Hi,

This is a good place to ask. The database simply doesn't have any information about the cell id that you are in. If the cell data is missing RaccoonOnMap tries to estimate your location with the LAC code (location are code). If even that one is missing then the server is using your country as a location information and puts you there in the middle of it. That has happened to you. Frankfurt seems to be the center point of Germany (according to Google Maps).

If you can use GPS receiver then RaccoonOnMap will store the cell GPS coordinates data to its database and then know the next time the (approximation) of the location of the cell.

You can also click (online) user marker and select "Location" tab which will tell what is the known accuracy of user's current location. E.g. for me it usually says "Got location from GSM cell info (cell id). Location accuracy 0.25 km" since I don't usually have my GPS device on.
