    Location based Python Application

Hi, Can anyone tell me if there is an AT command or API that will return to me local cell data on any S60 or Java phone? I currently develop location based progs for Telit modules that have easy access to this data throug AT#CSURV and AT+MONI but would now like to try this on a mobile phone

Any help appreciated before a spend lots of money on phones that may not support this

    thanks
    Chris

    Re: Location based Python Application

    Hello cjellwood,
as this is a Python forum I can only report about the phones that are running Python.

With Python it is easy to get the network location (cell-id, lac + signal strength) on phones running Symbian S60 OS 8 Feature Pack 3 (e.g. N70).

The same way you can get the cell-id and signal strength on Symbian S60 OS 8 Feature Pack 2 mobiles (e.g. Nokia 6680). But there you get the signal strength only as a bar representation (1-7).

With phones running the latest Symbian S60 OS 9.x (eg N73) you cann access the network location only after you get your application signed. This signature is IMEI specific. Wich means, you have to know the IMEI of the mobile that'll run your app in advance.

There is a cell collection project here at http://client338.lab.telin.nl:8080/w.../CellStats.jsp

they offer python script for volunteers and only say that it must be a S60 smart phone to work. Am I being mislead by the term 'smart' phone or is this a particular model?

    Hi cjellwood,
nice project indeed. I did'nt know this so far.
But take a look at http://contextwatcher.lab.telin.nl/C.../Software.aspx
    They say:
Please note: on 3rd edition phones Python extensions need to be signed using the same certificate and the same capabilities as the Python SIS file itself. If signed differently or using different capabilities, installation will work but you'll get KErrAccessDenied errors at run-time.
    (3rd edition means Symbian S60 OS 9.x)
