    Nokia maps and Google maps

Is there a public API that could be used to enable map content from Nokia or Google for 3rd party developpers?

The targeted platform is S60 3rd Edition SP1 and the HW would be N95.

    Thanks in advance.

You can find Map framework APIs in V3 FP1 and you can find more info here.

    Thanks man!

Unfortunately this link is only about the LBS API with which I have had no problem so far.

What I am after is an API that I could use to retrive map data (over GPRS and/or WLAN) based on my current position.

Thumbs up Re: Nokia maps and Google maps

A guy called Pascal Buirey's analysis about how google map works can be found here:
    http://www.codeproject.com/scrapbook/googlemap.asp

    Hope it helps.

Re: Nokia maps and Google maps

Thanks for these links. They are very interesting but seem to be targetted at web applications.

Does anyone know how I could retrieve the map tiles (256x256 png files if I understood) from the URL.

Basically I would need my C++ application to send these "URL requests" and get back the answers as PNG files.

As you understood, my application would then be some kind of client side using Google maps server to retrieve the data from.

Any advise will be highly appreciated.

    Thanks

Re: Nokia maps and Google maps

Note also that you can't utilize Google Maps in a commercial application: "API may be used only for services that are generally accessible to consumers without charge." (http://www.google.com/apis/maps/terms.html).

If you wish to build a commercial app, then you need to license map data from individual country organizations for digital mapping data, or companies that have aggregated the content in a country or globally (such as TeleAtlas or others).

Re: Nokia maps and Google maps

I've writed a simple app to show how we can draw maps centered on our position.
    http://www.newlc.com/playing-n95-use...pi-and-so-more

But you're true that's it miss an API to get this maps, perhaps you could look for
information into worlwind projet, an "google earth like" open source project
    http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/

    hopes it can help

Re: Nokia maps and Google maps

    Hi there,

    Nokia has already for some time offered a set of Location Based APIs;

    Map Image API for HTTP
    Maps API for JavaScript
    Places API for JavaScript
    Maps API for Qt
    Maps API for J2ME

They can all be accessed via this consolidated landing page:

    http://www.developer.nokia.com/Develop/Maps/

The Maps API for JavaScript web site is

    http://api.maps.nokia.com

It has an integrated PlayGround with a lot of examples to explore and you can view the code for each.

It also features a Developer's Guide and Getting Started documentation plus access to the full API Reference.

There are several Wiki articles written already, just seek for "Nokia Maps API".

Feel free to join the discussions on these APIs on the Projects side.

    Best Regards,
    Marko
