How to auto update my midlet

    Hi guys,

The questions is how do I auto update my midlet. I need to know when a newer version is uploaded to a server.

Do I have to write codes to handle this manually or I have to set a url to check version and notify user of newer versions?

I need my midlet to auto update whenever there is a new version.

    thanks.

You could send an SMS to the user with the URL to the new version
Or then you could have version information stored on your server and the MIDlet could check during launch for example if there is a newer version available.

You could this as per the URL below:
    http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.php/Update_Midlet

the above URL is to update the existing MIDlet.
if u want to check if server contains latest version of existing MIDlet, u may provide a URL in which @ every App load it will check the version of the same.

Thumbs up Re: How to auto update my midlet

Also at the startApp of application u can send a request to server which in turn returns u some response code according to which u can ask the user to update the current version by showing some alert or something else.
    thanks,

    Hi,
There are two ways for this.Like Hartti purposed that ->
1.Either your server send the latest information containing the URL of the newer version,
2.Or your application (as a client) checks that is there any new version available compare to the current version of the current version. This can be checked by calling a URL,This you have to check as soon as the application start and gets invoked. However this can be done anywhere, where you want to.
    Thanks with Regards,

Re: How to auto update my midlet

    Hello,
I'm trying to accomplish a similar thing here.
I'm able to check and compare the app versions and even download the latest copy.
But how do you start the actual update process from within the app?

    Thanks
    -Travis

Re: How to auto update my midlet

Do you mean how to start the install/update process after finding out that there is a newer version available? Use platformRequest()

    From the MIDP spec:
"If the URL specified refers to a MIDlet suite (either an Application Descriptor or a JAR file), the application handling the request MUST interpret it as a request to install the named package. In this case, the platform's normal MIDlet suite installation process SHOULD be used, and the user MUST be allowed to control the process (including cancelling the download and/or installation). If the MIDlet suite being installed is an update of the currently running MIDlet suite, the platform MUST first stop the currently running MIDlet suite before performing the update. On some platforms, the currently running MIDlet suite MAY need to be stopped before any installations can occur."

    More info for example here
