N95 midlet does not release resources

    Hi,

I am developing an j2me application and I noticed that closing a network connection in java (closing the stream and the connection and setting both to null) does not result in the phone releasing its underlying network connection.
It keeps the Wifi/ or UMTS connection up, and thus, I presume, eating batteries for no reason.

Is this a bug in the N95?

    regards,

    Hekkoe

I don't think that it keeps them on forever. If I remember correctly, there is a certain period the connection is is sort of active, so if the app needs the connection again it is easier to establish.

Yes, I you go to connection management I can see the connection is 'inactive', but as far as I can tell it never gets closed.

Did anyone else notice this, or found a workaround?

OK after some more testing i noticed that a GPRS connection does get closed after 3 minutes or so.

But if I use WiFi, the connection stays alive probably because other network traffic is coming in from the LAN (smb server pings, mediaserver anouncements, etc). My feeling is that this traffic should not keep the connection up, because its unrelated to the connection that I opened in the midlet, but I can see why this might be hard to detect by the symbian os.

Anyways, wifi kind of drains the battery, so it would be nice if the os actually closed the connection.
