Forum Nokia Wiki:Moving to Windows Vista (tm)

    To All,

By the end of year Windows XP will NOT be available on New pc's OEM licence will end. Many outlets do not sell Pc's with Windows XP.

If you want a copy of Win XP,buy now while you still can.

In preparation for this event I have started a Wiki Project page called
"Forum Nokia Wiki:Moving to Windows Vista (tm)"
    http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.ph..._Windows_Vista

The reason for this thread is so that any useful, notes questions and requests
can be put here. If you want to contribute to the page please do.

My old PC broke and found Vista (tm) has given the install kits a few problems which need documenting.
There have been about 30 threads on search of keyword "vista" which mention problems and the objective to have most answers in one area. The reason to have this in the Forum Lounge is the page covers S60,Java, Carbide and many other development products which may or may not work, so these would be off topic on a specific conference.

    So read the page http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.ph..._Windows_Vista
Go ahead and put comments in this thread

    Good Luck

Re: Forum Nokia Wiki:Moving to Windows Vista (tm)

    hi all,
I have put on the project wiki page two patches one for S60 3rd ed (9.1) first version the file cl_bpapi.pm will solve the Vista path problems caused by the C:\CSL Toolchain returning "wrong" values. The emulator will run under Vista "S60 3rd ed (9.1) first version",provided you do not have certain drivers loaded. See Wiki page for full details

The second patch is for S60 3rd Ed Feature Pack 1. This will compile GCCE and make .sis files. The emulator in 3rd FP1 stops under Vista and the epocwind.out shows error (-1), lots of times.

Vista always has C:\ therefore I see no reason to change the standard path "C:\CSL Toolchain\bin". If you change the path you will need the patches in the file, which may not be possible.

    Hi,

Hmm, I have heard mainly complaints about the overall quality of Windows Vista and that people are switching back to XP. That means new source of trouble for new developers.

Yes. My IMHO the Vista use of Dual Core speeds things up. The beta (rc1 etc..) were very unstable I could not be bothered to work on beta. The problem with path access and use is definitely breaking software previously working on XP, even MS own products, forcing up costs.

The problem will really hurt when new hardware with Quad Core (4x cpu?) and the new Intel ( x8) processsors for which no XP support will exist and so the PC will run so slow you have to put on Vista. MS is talking about paid support, for XP, but for individuals well you might as well buy another system. Individual Custom PC makers will doing great business!! building old spec PC's.

That means new source of trouble for new developers.
Well that was my motivation for starting the project. If I had trouble others will

Windows Vista (tm) works with App TRK debug and Carbide 1.2.2

    Hi All,
App TRK Gcc phone Debug for Carbide 1.2.2 with S60 3rd Ed FP1.

Although the S60 3rd FP1 will not work under Windows Vista the App Trk debug on the Nokia N95 using firmware version 12.x.x.x onwards, version 10 does not allow debug. The Nokia E61 works as well.

To set up carry out :-
The Windows Vista (tm) setup as described in Wiki at
    http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.ph..._Windows_Vista
Connect the Nokia N95 to the PC Using the USB cable.

Using Nokia PC Suite,Vista version, install the file below on the phone
    "C:\Program Files\Nokia\Carbide.c++ v1.2\plugins\com.nokia.carbide.trk.support_1.2.0.29\trk\s60\s60_3_1_app_trk_2_7.sisx"

Make sure you have update Carbide.c++ 1.2 with the latest updates.

In Carbide.c++ 1.2 create a new version of Hello World using the wizard.
Select the GCCE Phone Debug from the list, not the usual SIS file compilation.

Start the App TRK application on the N95 got to App TRK settings and select USB. Exit App Trk and restart the APP Trk. This should show status as connected

Make sure you have exited Nokia PC Suite as the port will be locked otherwise

Select the project header and Right Click debug.
The debug display comes up and select Communication tab.
Select the drop down where the COM1 is showing, scroll down, and find
the first port with "00000" at the beginning. Select this port and click ok.
Now click debug. The Debug screen appears.
It an TRK communications error message pops up.
Make sure you have exited Nokia PC Suite as the port will be locked otherwise
Check the App Trk is still running on the Phone.
If still having problems try the next port number beginning with "00000"

If all is well the HelloWorld application will be running on the phone.

To stop the application on the first line of E32Main. Go back to debug setting and tick the box to create a breakpoint. You can now step to next breakpoint.

Obviously the will only work with first 21 days of you Carbide install. This will not work with Express version after 21 days from install

This method is far faster than the emulator and gives a better idea of how the program will work.

    Good Luck

Re: Forum Nokia Wiki:Moving to Windows Vista (tm)

    Hi,
S60 3rd Ed Feature pack 2 Beta (Released October 2007) emulator works under Vista compilation with a patch

    http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.ph..._Windows_Vista

The RealTek Audio High Definition drivers (which wont work on Vista or on Windows XP !!) must be disabled.

The patch to compile under GCCE. I cannot say what will happen with ARM.
There is an update note saying that Windows Server 2003 must stay at SP1, if you add SP2 this breaks Carbide.C++ and S60 3rd Edition

If you are unfortunate enough to have Vista on your PC it's better just to downgrade to XP. You will save yourself a lot of grief in the long run.
Remember that old cliche "Linux is not ready for the desktop", well Vista is not ready for the desktop either

Yes, but when my old pc burnt out the IDE drive was removed I downloaded all the drivers for XP using vista copied them to the IDE drive containing XP and booted from the XP Drive (service PACK 2) on my dual core 1GB and installed the drivers when required. This works using XP Professional as thats a multi root system, might not work on XP Home as that a single root system (c.

The disk defragmentor on XP is so *much better* than the Vista version. Just running this once on a Vista system after initial install/startup gives a real boost to the Vista general speed. BUT this has been mentioned to Microsoft several times Just wish MS would listen

Re: Forum Nokia Wiki:Moving to Windows Vista (tm)

The main problems with install the older products on Windows Vista(tm) is they lock up.

First of all the problem with "Run as Adminstrator" was needed, but some early SDK "hung" and did not complete install

Recently there was a note on a Windows Vista (tm) website and this suggested that older games could be installed and run under Vista by creating a shortcut on desktop. Changing the properties of the shortcut "Compatability" to run as "Windows 2000" not Windows XP and changing to "run in 256 colour", to stop Aero errors.

This allowed "Carbide J 1.5 setup", to complete. This install is not pretty, and this takes twice as long to install. There are still error messages which have to be bypassed.

The old sun runtime 1.5.0.5 must be removed and replace with version 1.5.0.12, before attempting to install any older SDK with an early version installer.

This means quite a few applications would "run", but very much slower as they would be operating in "Windows 2000" emulation mode, rather like Vista Ultimate can run a "Windows XP" emulation.

Re: Forum Nokia Wiki:Moving to Windows Vista (tm)

    Happy New Year to all,
Microsoft have said the will continue to sell Windows XP "...until June 2008". This is probably due to the release of XP Service Pack 3. This service Pack 3 is to upgrade all versions to be compatible with Vista.

The last service pack for Windows Server 2003 changed so much that using the upgraded server was unreliable for development work.

While we cannot tell any problems will occur please read the update intoduction on wiki page to see ways of avoiding problems.

Re: Forum Nokia Wiki:Moving to Windows Vista (tm)

    Hi All,
The release of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 has taken place on 18th March 2008.
    The article describes the news.

The way I approached this installation was to download the 468mb file onto Vista and to run the program from an Adminstrator account,Premium version and this rebooted several times in the course of install, about under 2 hours 1GB, dual core.

The PC was left alone as you cannot use this during the install of the service pack 1.

The speed of login and general use has become much shorter and the famous "lagging" seems to have disappeared. There appears "speed ups" all over the place.

The Windows Update does *NOT* seem to work, no suprise there, frankly this may be to much for Windows Update.

The tests of previously installed Nokia products with the patches on the wiki article still work.

The Real Tek audio drivers still wont work with the S60 WINS emulator but that was same problem with Windows XP.

    Good Luck

Thumbs up Re: Forum Nokia Wiki:Moving to Windows Vista (tm)

AMAZING Microsoft is offering FREE support for Vista SP1 to anyone even OEM machines, ie HP,PACKARD BELL etc.

see website Windows Vista SP1 support site

see the news article and quietly is the name at MS.

This procedure of loading the 430MB SP1 file onto CD/hard drive and letting the install work has worked on 3 different manufacturer PC laptop without problems.

Still not convinced that Windows Update can cope because the network drivers and Windows update software is replaced during upgrade, what happens if you network hub fails.

In U.K. with broadband so quick, seems silly not to load the whole file, the charge is £0.37 at maximum.

The direct link to website is free telephone/email support

You will need a Windows Live ID, or MSN IM messgenger, hotmail account to enter,
