it's not possible as far as i know.

You can use System.getProperty() to get phone model and version, but you can't get the operating system info i.e. Symbian or Windows Mobile.

    Hi r.madhusudanan,

Just to add, here is the doc where you can find the property key for that.

MIDP: System Properties (with Example) v1.2

I also need to find the OS of the device at the runtime. What is the way of doing this?

    Thanks and regards.

Re: How to find device OS

    Hi,

I want to get OS name and OS version in all J2ME supported devices. The link you have given tells only for third edition Nokia devices. What about other ones?
    Can you help me?

    Thanks and regards.

Re: How to find device OS

Use the same property on other devices. Whether it works or not, and what it retuns on those, is a different question. There is no single method/API that's guaranteed to work on all devices. So, you may want to do it, but it doesn't mean that it is possible.

And as far as other manufacturer's devices, you could perhaps ask about that on other manufacturer's support forums (e.g., Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, LGE, etc.), rather than on Nokia's. You wouldn't go on a Toyota forum to ask about Ford details, either, would you?

Re: How to find device OS

    Thank you.
I just mentioned all Nokia devices since here is a nokia forum. All S40 and S60 devices.

I tried in some other devices. It just returns the model of the device. For example in 6300 (S40 device), It returns "Nokia6300/07.21".
6120classic is a third edition device and it returns "Nokia6120c/06.01". According to link you gave, third edition devices support sw_platform attribute. But It is not supported in 6120.
Even in E66, It returns "NokiaE66-1/0.21.012"

I also need os name and its version.

    Thanks and regards.

Re: How to find device OS

I guess you just have to make an internal table that maps mode numbers to the platform/OS version and do a lookup. If you make it a network service, then the app can ask the network service, and you can update the data without having to update the application or carry a fixed list with the application. Of course, you can still use a list/table in the application and periodically update it from the network service.

You can also try to use HTTP-USER_AGENT (i.e., launch the web browser, or UAProf info). Search also for WURFL.

However, there's probably still no method that'll work 100% to your satisfaction and you just have to live with that or figure out a way not to need to know.
