Changing App Mgr settings from J2ME app

Hi, is there a way to change the App Mgr settings from within a J2ME app?

I have an app that is signed using a Verisign certificate. My app often accesses the phone's PIM and also sends SMS'es on behalf of the users. Unless the user explicitly changes the App Mgr Suite Settings to always allow access to Read and Edit user data (among other settings), the app prompts for permission each time it accesses the PIM. It is difficult to educate users to make these setting changes and therefore they get a sub-optimal experience when they use the app.

Is there a way to modify these settings through the J2ME app itself, maybe by asking the user's permission. At least can we take the users automatically to the settings options, so they know this can be done?

    Thanks.

Well Debasin, as ur app is signed first thing is the pop up should not come, but if it still commin the u cant change or send user to settings, the only think one can do is to display message to user regarding the settings.

It is signed but not Java Verified.

My understanding is that with signed apps the pop-ups stop coming after the app manager settings are changed. With Java-verified apps, the pop-ups do not come at all. Is that correct?

As for change App. Manager settings, it's not possible at all.
A J2ME application can't change App. Manager settings.

The best you can do is displaying some note in your application, telling users to change all possible settings to "always allowed".

And keep in mind if user is on a S40 phone, there's no "App. Manager", so that the way to change settings is a little bit different.

    best regards

    alb3530 is correct.

    couple of tidbits

the JavaVerified testing (signing) and Versign/Thawte certificates place the MIDlet in the same identified 3rd party domain, so the default access rights and available access righst for those MIDlets are the same.

Note also that the default settings are likely more restrictive than what is available for the MIDlet as an optional setting. the user has to change the settings manually.

For SMS sending the nokia phones usually always prompts the user even for signed MIDlets

I am repeating myself, but please check here for more details

Re: Changing App Mgr settings from J2ME app

Thanks everyone for your prompt input.

Would have been nice if J2ME had a way to do it - my app is used by very non-tech users, and to expect them to make the effort to find the App Manager (on Series 60 phones), find my app, change the Suite Settings is a bit of an ask.

Anyway, it seems there is no other option for now...
