    Java Capabilities on Nokia

    Hi,

I've done some Symbian C++ programming before, but I would now like to try make an app in Java for the Nokia N95 for example. I just wanted to clarify a few things before I get started in Java, as I think I may HAVE to continue using C++.

Can I do all of the following in Java with the Nokia SDK:

    - Access the GPS (Location class I assume)
    - Access websites (GPRS or otherwise)
    - Run the app in the background
    - Start the app on startup
    - Read keys (or assign one that can be read) by the app while it's in the background. If not, can I make any key a global shortcut key to open the app.

    Thank you for your assistance.

    Dan.

Access GPS: Yes, through Location API, JSR-179

Access websites: Yes, although if you want to render HTML on the screen you have to write that code yourself.

    Run in the background: Yes

Start the app on startup: not possible

Read keys while background: not possible

    Global shortcut key: Not possible

Very concise, and very helpful. Thank you.

One other question then, can the three things that can't be done in Java be done in C++? So for C++, can you:

    - Start the app on startup
    - Read keys while background
    - Global shortcut key

    Thanks again.

Sure, you can do all three with Symbian C++.

    Re: Java Capabilities on Nokia

    Awesome, thanks for that info.

I'll just make a little C++ app that runs on startup, handles keys, and sits in the background. Then I can just launch the Java app from the C++ app whenever I need it.

Does that sound reasonable to people?
