Emulator closes when debug session ends

    Hi,

I'm using Nokia S60 2nd Ed FP3 SDK with VS2003 SP1 and Carbide.vs 2.0.1. Every time I start a debug session, emulator starts, wasting a minute to be initialized. After I finished debug session, emulator closes. And so on.

Is there any way to keep emulator running while debugging?

    Thanks for your time.

The emulator is supposed to close once the debug session is over. I dont think there is any other way its supposed to be and I dont think you can make it behave any other way ;)

First of all, thanks for your reply.

I don't agree with you: I know that devloping in J2ME, you can. An emulator is only listening a port and receive instructions from this port. Why must be closed every time debug session is over?

There should be any way to do it .... I'm wasting a lot of time. All of you, Symbian C++ developers, are wasting the same time I waste??? We are losing productivity!!

    Thanks.

Yes ! I have found there is.

In VS.Net in the project settings -> Debugging ->Command there is the $(TargetPath) value. Change this to point to the emulator exe epoc.exe like
    C:\Symbian\9.1\S60_3rd_MR\Epoc32\release\winscw\udeb\epoc.exe

Start a debugging session, find your app in the menu and start it. You should be able to start the app and then close your app without the emulator going away.

Dont get too frustrated with 'time wasting', your first project in Symbian C++ will consist of a lot of research and hair pulling. It aint easy at first friend.

Thanks for your reply and your time.

I already had Command parameter set to C:\Symbian\...\epoc.exe. In fact, I'm developing with S60 2nd FP3. Maybe in S60 3rd it works but, in 2nd FP3, it doesn't.

I don't know why but debug session is unavoidably bound to emulator instance!! It has no sense!

I agree with you: the less time I'm wasting in Symbian C++ is when emulator is loading every time ...

Thanks. Anyway ... it would be nice to find a solution ...

Ok. I have not played with 2nd Ed, but i can guess another way (Attaching to the epoc.exe process). Try the following.

    (I'm assuming you are using VS.Net 2003)

    1. Start the emulator outside of VS .Net (i.e on its own, epoc.exe).
    2. Start your app within the emulator.
    3. In VS.Net go to Debug menu -> Processes.
    4. Scroll down the list of processes until you find epoc.exe and select it.
    5. Click on Attach... button, make sure 'Native' is ticked. Then 'Ok'.

Sometimes it doesnt work the first time, so try again if it doesnt.

    i agree with xavi
it may not be a good reason for losing more time if we have lost lots of time researching in some stuff for introducing with symbian and carbide!
why emulator is closed? i understand his angriness as i am. the carbide writers has not noticed that everytime bringing emulator up takes so many time? why it must be closed everytime? it's really nonsense. i use S60 3rd Ed. FP2 with Carbide v1.2 and have the same problem. :(
