    Porting Java Applications to Symbian

    Hi,

I am newbie and I am starting on S60 platform and have a Nokia N80. I had a very basic question and my question might seem really stupid to some of the Symbian guru's out there.

Is it possible to directly port a normal Java code for the Symbian OS using some compiler ? If so what compiler can be used ?

Although my thoughts are that it is not entirely possible to do it automatically. It would be great if some useful tips or links could be provided to do the porting. I hope I am posting on the correct forum.

    Thanks all

Unfortunately there is no tool to do this kind of conversion. You need to do it manually

Any good suggestions/links where I should go about reading about the porting process and how complex it is ?

I am not aware of any (in addition to differences in languages (C++ vs. Java), there is also differences in exception handling, also Symbian uses Active Objects etc.) so I would say that you need to rethink the whole application structure and build the new app from clean slate

well then u can have to work on j2me, since the kvm for mobile is to small so it dose not support all the core java feature. so directly porting wont be that easy better u write the thing in j2me.

prakash is right, I was reading your question in a wrong way. Sorry for that.
Of course Java ME applications work directly on Symbian devices.
