Launch S60 app directly after install

    Hi,
Is it possible to launch an S60 application right after it installs?

Basically what I am trying to do is enable our S60 application to be installed OTA and then right after it completes installation would like to launch the application.

    Has anyone done this before?

    Best regards,
    - bhaskar

Yes it is possible, but to avoid repeating what has already been answered, I'd suggest you use the search facility or the wiki, as this is a rather common topic. The sdk doc contains info about this too (search FR, RI in pkg docs)

Yeh.. PushL suggested very right method. Actually FR,RI means File Run and Run on Install..

just put these lines at the end of in ur .pkg file then make sis

    "..\urApplication.exe"-"!:\urApplication.exe",FR,RI

Although bear in mind that if you require Nokia manufacturer capabilities (and therefore Symbian Signing), the current Nokia Test criteria (1.9) explictly forbids applications to auto start. Test NINS-02:

"The application may not start automatically by default".

Of course, this may change soon with the new looser Symbian-Signed scheme coming.

    FR,RI is a nice option.
But the problem comes when you do a partial update and your base exe is not a part of your update package.(say you only want to update some dlls and not your main exe)

for such situations what you cna do is have a server(exe) for which your application is a client.
Your server should watch for installation events and if required do a restart of your main application.

Though i have not implemented it, this looks like one possible solution.
    Cheers

I think there are two separate discussions here.

    - The original question from roy_bhaskar is how to start application right after installation.

    - The comment from KevinD is about auto-start an application after reboot.

For the first one, I am not aware of any test criteria that forbid it. For the second one, there is limitation as described by KevinD.

Thanks for clarifying. I was indeed asking about starting app right after install. Will give the FR,RI option a try.

That's a good point Antony. Now that you mention it I recall having received a FR,RI as a fatal error by a testing house. We finally removed that feature (wasn't very essential in this case) so it was left to see what behaviour was expected.. (or if this was simply a misinterpretation of the criteria by the testing house)
