    E65 - WPA2 compatible at all?

    Hello!

I cannot connect with my Nokia E65 (2.0633.65.01 RM-208) to my WLAN Access Point (Linksys WAG200G) via WPA2 (AES or TKIP+AES). With WEP and WPA it works properly. I've tried a lot of settings on my AP and E65 and used also short and easy passphrases like "test12345", but without any results.

With other APs it works. Does anybody know why it still does not work with that AP? I also tried updated my AP with the latest firmware and I also just resetted to factory settings.

    Thanks in Advance,

    Julian

What is the software version you have on your WLAN AP?

Will pass this information to S60 WLAN IOT lab and to Cisco.

    Re: E65 - WPA2 compatible at all?

    Hi,

FYI: I am using a Nokia E65 with software release 2.0633.65.01 to connect to a 3Com Model 3CRWE776075 AP with software release 1.6.39.

I can connect successfully using WPA-PSK/TKIP security, however the problem that I have found is that the Nokia E65 does not support a 64 character hex passphrase.

It will only accept 63 characters in hex, which my AP doesn't like. I have reported this problem through the Nokia website (ref. T2007110100XFS010Z3609953), but have not gotten a working solution yet).

As an alternative I am now using an ASCII passphrase.

    Regards, JKi.

Currently the UI only accepts passphrase (max 63 characters), from which PSK is generated.

    Re: E65 - WPA2 compatible at all?

    Niklas,

Thanks for you prompt reply to my posting. To the best of my knowledge the standard expects the passphrase to be from 8 to 63 printable ASCII characters or 64 hexadecimal digits (256 bits).

While if you choose to use the ASCII characters, a hash function reduces it from 504 bits (63 characters * 8 bits/character) to 256 bits (using also the SSID).

So by only accepting 63 characters, regardless of the type of key (hex. or ASCII), the UI prevents the user from entering 64 hex. passphrases and forces the user to use an ASCII phrase thereby preventing the device to be interoperable with devices that do not support ASCII passphrases.

Please give an indication when we can expect the software to support passphrases as per the standard.

    Regards, Jk.

    Re: E65 - WPA2 compatible at all?

    JKi,
this is currently not supported but I discussed today with the WLAN team and understood that this requirement had been already identified.

I think it is very likely that this feature will be supported in future phones. Unfortunately, I would expect that it would not be backported to E65 which already has its second maintenance release (PR2) sw release out.

As far as I know WIFI certification test does not include to test 64 characters (hex).

    Re: E65 - WPA2 compatible at all?

The WLAN team informed me that indeed that there seems to be a WPA2 IOT issue with Nokia E65 (2.0633.65.01 RM-208) and (Linksys WAG200G).

However, WPA2 works without problems between N95 and Linksys WAG 200G.

Investigation continues. Thx for letting us know.

    Re: E65 - WPA2 compatible at all?

The root cause is that the Linksys AP sends EAPOL version 1 messages and the terminal (Nokia E65) EAPOL version 2 messages. The AP does not seem to accept version 2 messages but keeps restarting the authentication (probably it decides that the Key MIC check fails and discards the message; IEEE 802.11i, Section 8.5.3.2). According to Section 7.5.7 in IEEE 802.1X Std 2004 (or 2001), the AP should accept messages of both versions.

In Nokia N95 and other Symbian 3.1 products onwards this kind of problem is fixed and thus Nokia N95 works with Linksys AP.

I would expect that a newer firmware for the AP will be released and it will solve this issue.
