Nokia N95 8GB adds Flash Lite 3 support

So, the Nokia N95 8GB firmware V 15.0.015 released today adds Flash Lite 3 support. It means that if you upgrade to this firmware your Nokia N95 8GB will become Flash Lite 3 enabled.

The Flash Lite 3 implementation is similar to the previous one, supporting Flash Lite 3 content into standalone, screensaver and browser mode.

You can view Flash Video content using the browser.

Question, will it become a standard practice to upgrade the FL runtime using firmware upgrades?
For developers this is not the best scenario since there will be no way to know which FL runtime a user has.

The only way is to create a patch into WURFL Flash Lite information I think.

Re: Nokia N95 8GB adds Flash Lite 3 support

Quick note, in case someone gets frustrated with not being able to update his/her phone to this version; This update might or might not be available for a specific N95 8GB. See this FAQ entry
    http://europe.nokia.com/A4577229#faq35

Note also that one of the N95 8GB devices in RDA is running this firmware.

The current system does not scale to that (to include Series 40 devices), as the system relies on some Symbian native app on the background. We'll see what we can do...

    Hi Guys,

What are the implications for running existing Flash Lite 2 applications after doing a firmware update? Will existing FL2 apps still run on the N95 or will developers need to provide end-users with a Flash Lite 3 specific version of their applications?

    Hi Christopher,

All previous content should play with new players, except where security is breached. That means that if you are performing network and local access in your older content and running on the new player then this will not work without changes

    Ciao Christopher,

if the FL2.x or 1.1 needs internet connection it will not work.
FL3 had introduced a new security features that break backward compatibility.

    Here is a great explanation:

Also here something about the crossdomain.xml requirements:

    Hi Chall3n3r,

The reason there's a 6 second splash screen in the FL3 developer edition standalone player is because it's provided by Adobe and not Nokia. It's provided to developers so they can start testing their own FL3 content before actual Nokia devices are availalbe with FL3 pre-installed or updateable via firmware by Nokia.

The actual standalone player and other implementatins by Nokia will not have any splash screen.

Re: Nokia N95 8GB adds Flash Lite 3 support

Thanks Alessandro and Mark. I was aware of the new security restrictions on Flash Lite 3 but was hoping that something had changed at the last minute to get round this.

Moving to Flash Lite 3 via Firmware updates sounds like a real bad idea to me (actually it would have been a great idea if FL3 was compatible with FL2). It's going to leave many people in the Flash Lite community with a serious headache.

I now have a problem where my network aware application is no longer guaranteed to work on all N95's, unless the user is aware of their firmware version and/or the version of Flash Lite that is installed on their device. And to be honest the end-user shouldn't have to worry about such issues and then decide whether to download the Flash Lite 2 or Flash Lite 3 version of my app.

What's Nokia's reasoning behind introducing Flash Lite 3 onto the N95? I'd have thought it would have made more sense to simply roll it out on brand new models rather than introducing it onto devices that have already hit the market.

Are there workarounds that I can use? For example is there any way to package both the Fl2 and FL3 versions of my app into a sis then determine what version of Flash Lite is installed on the device so that the correct version of the app can be installed? Or are we going to have to rely on the end-user to make the correct decision when downloading the application in the first place? In fact are there any mobile content providers who let you flag your apps as compatible with certain firmware version? Can't ever remember seeing such options on Handango, Clickapps or Mosh even!

What about other Series 60 3rd edition devices? Will they start using FL3 via a firmware update too?

Hope this doesn't all sound horribly negative guys. Flash Lite is great but the last thing I want is potential users/customers being unable to successfully install and use my applications on their devices simply because they weren't aware of their firmware version and Flash Lite version.

Re: Nokia N95 8GB adds Flash Lite 3 support

    hi Bill,

thanks for your reply. yes i know that

but i think the developer edition of FL should have something useful to developers. like a ondevice loging and error/warnings at runtime, rather just quitly ignoring things.

i.e. the crossdomain.xml issue is already get asked many times, the current FL developer edition completly ignors it, even for developers. it'd cool if developer edition of FL can provide more error/warning messages to developer, provide some kind of on-device debugging so developers can make better FL applications.

@Christopher: i agree with you, it could be big deal for developers. i'm a bit anti to this new FL3 security model. i don't see any need for this.

in FL we already have so many security prompts for user, like when application tries to access network, user have to allow or cancel the request. and its true for all other operations which can cost to user including phone dialing etc. after all these security majors already in place, this local playback security feels quite unnecessary.

i feel so sad when i see this as first Flash player version which breaks older content, which not a tradition of Flash technology.

lets see how we get around this :/

Re: Nokia N95 8GB adds Flash Lite 3 support

    Ciao Christopher,

    agree with your points.
In any case, the only way to know which FL version is installed on a device would be using WURFL. We are working hard to make FL information as reliable as possible.

So for example for the N95 8GB (with firmware 15) we will make sure that there will be an entry based on the UA string which actually contains the firmware version.

Using WURFL will work only if the content is downloaded using a mobile web page. All other distributions will not work, meaning there is no way to know which FL version a N95 8GB has it. The assumption is that is FL2 enabled based on the S60 3rd FP2.

In any case, not sure if you already join, but please join the Boston Adobe Mobile and Device User Group www.flashmobilegroup.org and if you are interested in WURFL for FL there is a dedicated group too.

Re: Nokia N95 8GB adds Flash Lite 3 support

    Hi everybody,
Do you know why Adobe Flash Lite 3 ( on Nokia N95 8GB ) cannot support Adobe Flash Player 9 videos ?
Is there any solution to resolve that ?
    Thanks for your answer .
