Issues with Flash Lite 3 Video

    Hi All,

Just installed the new update to my lovelly N95 8gb. Everything works great except we have big issues with one of the features of video playback.

Not sure if this meant to happen in the standalone player ( it really shouldn't), but here goes:

As soon as a video stream starts it triggers flash player to rotate, as if you were opening the slider. This is a real issue in standalone mode and really limits how video can be used because the developer has no control here. Are there any new apis we can access to control this? The worse side effect is that once that rotation has happened there is no way of going back to portrait. So the application remains locked in landscape mode.

If need be I can forward the app we are building, which will highlight the usability issues.

On a positive note, the video playback quality looks superb....

    Cheers

    Ciao Nick,

did you try to test it on the RDA?
I have done a FL3 demo with Flash Video playback and had no issue.

Re: Issues with Flash Lite 3 Video

    Hi Stephen/Alessandro,

Stephen - I'll try and get a version I can send you on Monday.

Alessandro - when you demoed the video from the standalone player I pressume it rotated as soon as it started? So did it then go back once it finished playing?

So far as I can see the issue with the standalone player is:

it doesnt know when the video has ended
If the softkeys are set by the application (normal FL menu disabled) then is impossible for the user to manually change rotation
In our application we allowed the user to choose landscape or portrait, but with auto-landscape this choice is now gone.

Also just to clarify the setup - we are using a real rtmp stream from Flash Media Server not http progressive download.

    Cheers

    Ciao Nick,

on the demo I make it rotate with an animation.

Can you detect the orientation with the screen width/height? And then modify the layout?

Not sure if possible since I do not if the FL player detects the auto rotation.

    Hi Alessandro,

    This is confusing

So you aren't having rotation forced onto you with auto rotate. We were using animation to change between landscape and portrait too. But the auto rotate means we can't.

We should be able to detect the change as there is orientation related fscommand2, I forget what its called. So we could visually design for the change but we would still be stuck in landscape mode for the whole app.

This seems to be a feature of the web browser and the standalone player. It makes sense in the browser, because its isolating video content within HTML but it breaks things in the standalone player. I think the key difference here is that in the browser FL3 is consuming generic web video whereas if the file is being run in the standalone player then its content specifically made for FL3.

    Ciao

I am testing on my N82 and yes the auto rotate kicks in if I set my phone landscape.

About the detection of the orientation not sure but it should work.
    Sorry about the confusion !

I need to check how it works on the browser using the RDA since don't have a N95 8GB.

    Hi Alessandro,

Its a confusing thing to explain

Just to be clear the rotation to landscape is activated for me without me setting my phone to landscape!

    Ciao Nick,

ops! did not know that. Is it within the browser or standalone?
My N82 does it automatically when I position the phone in landscape!

Well I've only really checked standalone player. But when I looked at a few websites with flash video they also rotate to landscape when you select the flash video swf, but its a bit different because it kind of takes content out of html and plays it back on its own. Difficult to explain but it seems to work ok in the browser.

    Cheers

    Hi Nick,

Can you send me the file to test as well so I can ask our FL engineers to take a look at the problem?

Also can you let me know what the version # is that's reported back for the FL3 player on your N95 8GB (after firmware update)?

FYI... I'm still waiting for the Nokia Software Updater to allow me to update my firmware - argh...

    Hi Bill,

Sent a version to you offlist.

For your N95 8Gb - you may have to trick the update service - has worked well for me in the past. Updates to other models/regions can take ages.

Re: Issues with Flash Lite 3 Video

    hi nick,

you are right, i have the same problems.

i try to develope a complete fl3 media center with channels, thumbview and videoplayer.

as soon as the video playback starts the hole movie rotates automaticly.

ok, here is what i figure out:
    1) with my nokia n80 and the developer version it doenst rotate
    2) with my nokia n95,black 8gb it rotates when i open it in standalone mode

    3) it doesnt rotate when i open it with the internal nokia browser and html page with includes the object class for the flashlite player (publish in cs3 with html + swf and upload it to your server, open your url "http://yourserver.com/yourfl.html")

the problem is that fl3 or the nokia widget (dont know yet) adds a virtual mouse where you loose all internal flash lite focus. buttons, rollover doesnt works

    4) when you dont set fscommand2 fullscreen it doenst rotate, but looks very ugly and you know you will loose a lot of pixels.

    5) at the moment it seems that the best way is to add stage listener and adjust all elements when the autoamtic rotation call initialize. i know this is a lot of work and beware of adding too much listener. it seems you will loose memory and will not complete return when you set removelistener.

i hope that adobe gives a fast solution cause at the moment is very user unfriendly.

as soon as i have my mediacenter ready (4 days or so) i will post the beta link for internal testing.

    best

Just a quick update to say that the platform team are looking at the rotation issue - which appears to have been implemented as a feature. Workaround has been requested.

The issue with the "mouse" pointer, control and focus is also known - and I will make sure that any info is passed on as it arrives.

Re: Issues with Flash Lite 3 Video

    Hi Gary,

Its clear that there problem is with the Nokia implementation.

In summary there are 2 sides to this: the 'feature' and the 'bug'.

So based on what Steve has told us the auto-rotation has been implemented as a feature. This is a really bad move for the standalone player, however it has a more relevent use case within the browser. A good use case, one of many, for why its bad in the standalone player is text entry. A video application might want to let the user input text inline whilst a video is being played. Text entry doesnt work in landscape mode as a concept so its not therefore a valid option anymore.

The 'bug' is specific to the standalone player implementation and is that the auto-rotate feature doesn't undo the rotation when the video playback stops. This is a critical bug because it forces all video applications to run in landscape regardless of whether video is being playedback.

Steve, Thanks again for following up. Would be great to see this resolved somehow.

    Cheers
