    Change Name of Application with Symbian C++ and Carbide

    Hello,

    I have see that a lot of people have problems for change the application name with smbyan. I will explain here how we can make this. I have found somme exemple in documentation for do this, but none was ok.

    All file to modify are located in folder "data" (default directory). Modify first the file appName.rss. this inlude must be present : #include <appinfo.rh>.
    Add these lines if not existing :

    RESOURCE LOCALISABLE_APP_INFO r_localisable_app_info
    {
    short_caption = "NameOfApp";//name display under icon
    caption_and_icon =
    {
    CAPTION_AND_ICON_INFO
    {
    caption="NameOfApp1"; //Name of application used in the programm
    }
    };
    }

    then the file appName_reg.rss must look this:

    #include <appinfo.rh>
    #include <appName.rsg> //this file is generate in the pakage. be sure that it is made correctly
    UID2 KUidAppRegistrationResourceFile
    UID3 0xE01FF1d8

    RESOURCE APP_REGISTRATION_INFO
    {
    app_file="AppName";
    localisable_resource_file = "\\resource\\apps\\appName"; //appName must be change if you change the name of appName.rsg . IT must always the same name that file
    localisable_resource_id = R_LOCALISABLE_APP_INFO;

    embeddability=KAppNotEmbeddable;
    newfile=KAppDoesNotSupportNewFile;
    }

    finnaly clean the project and compile it. You must uninstall preview install on the mobile, for make available modifie

    Important info are in red. appName must be replace by your project name.
    The name of installation application can be change in the .pkg file :
    ; standard SIS file header
    #{"AppNameForInstallation"},(0xe01ff1d8),2,10,0

    If you have problem create a new project and you can understand better the principe.

    If you have question send me a mail.

    good luck with symbian

    Could you help with changing app name and .mif at runtime? And is it possible to make this without restart? Who knows? please share your experience.

    Why don't you take your project files, read their content and see where that "MyApp" string comes from? We're talking programming here so nothing happens by magic, just read those files and learn how it happens. I bet it will take you less than it took to fesign that nice wireframe and in the process you will learn many other useful things.

    How hard is it to just answer the dam question for the "Experts"? If the guy knew the answer already he wouldn't ask, would he? And others come here with the same problems and it's really annoying to see the arrogance of the experts and champions instead of the real answer for the question being discussed. symbian sux to begin with...

    The search-approach works quite well actually. And it also matters if it has a LOCALISABLE_APP_INFO stuff or not. If yes, the name can be altered in that resource. If not, the entire executable has to be renamed, involving renaming the resource files, and modifying the app_file in _reg.rss.

    Re: Change Name of Application with Symbian C++ and Carbide

    I do believe that it is more important to give one the fishing tools rather than give him a lot of fishes. Yes, providing a simple answer to a simple question is easy (some times), but trust me, one gets tired soon doing that.
    The first advice in http://tinyurl.com/StartSymbian is to take an example app and read it through, making sure you understand what it does. Then read the docs. If you don't do that, then yes, Symbian [C++ ] sucks, and yes, those who know Symbian may end-up being rude and arrogant. Or may look to be so, from a distance.

    Note that even the specification of the problem was incomplete so the solution may be a search (or the tips given by wizard_hu_) or may be an API call, if the string displayed in the status pane is meant to be dynamic, reflecting not only the title of the app but also its current state/view. That's not to mention that the first post in this thread has many of the answers one needs for this particular problem.
