    3G: Nokia N95 video quality

    Hi,
We are testing N95 phone as part of our 3G trails. We are also testing SonyEricsson phone as part of the same 3G trails.

When we use a pre-recorded video clip to send it to (through 3G) both phones the quality on the nokia is worse than that of the sony phone.

We observed More blocky video, and the picture will not completely update on the nokia phone, where as the sony Ericsson phone is fine.

Do we need to do any pre-prossesing of the video before we send it to through 3G. The video clip resolution is QCIF.

    thanks and appreciate your response.

One good test would be to put the clip on MMC to compare the quality without having sent it through the network. That would indicate if the problem you are seeing is in the video player (or video clip), or in the 3G connectivity area.

And while the camcorder is on, hit Options, choose Settings and check the Video quality setting value, too.

We don't see any frame losses or any errors. We rule out the clip as the source of the problem as the same clip is good on Sony.

One thing we observed is that the display area of the nokia is bigger than sony. May be nokia is expanding the image to display it on bigger screen size. QCIF image is expanded to CIF display area, so more blocky? The bit rate of the video is 50kbps and if we expand the image it will look bad.

One of our customers (located in Australia) told that they talked to nokia and they were able to get information from Nokia to make it better. The customer refused to share that information with us fearing that we pass that to their competition.

Question to clarify: are you trying to send the video TO the phone or FROM the phone?

And yes, if you switch the videoplayer to full-screen mode, the image is enlarged to the full screen resolution. In normal (portrait) mode, the video should be displayed in its original size. 50kbps is quite low bitrate for a video to be clear/usable.

The Phone is receiving the Video. 3G bandwidth is only 64kbps (audio, video and control). The connection between Phone and server is 64k pipe over wireless.

If the connection speed is 64kbps, then you probably do not have 3G connection. 3G enables much faster connectivity. Nokia RealPlayer default connectivity setting for 3G/UMTS is 1.34mbps. Even the EDGE setting is 65.28kbps. Please check your settings.

3G-324M is on circuit switched network, it is 64kbps. 3G Video Telephony on circuit switched network.
