    YUV capture from camera

    Hi All,

Is it possible to get a YUV format image from the camera preview to work with?

I'm working on N82 phone at the moment.
I saw a post from far 2002 and nobody answered it...

Any information would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

    Re: YUV capture from camera

    Hi,

It depends what you mean by camera preview?

It may also depend on your phone model.

The viewfinder is only "bitmap" or "direct", no YUV available there as far as I'm aware. However, if you use CCamera class to get a TCameraInfo then you can check iImageFormatsSupported & iVideoFrameFormatsSupported to see which formats the camera will provide.

If I remember correctly a lot of S60 phones only support JPEG for image capture (at least at high resolutions) but you should be able to get video frames in YUV formats. Check the SDK documentation for CCamera & TCameraInfo.

    Hope that helps,

    Re: YUV capture from camera

    Sorcery, thanks for the answer.

Yes, I wasn't specific, I'm interested in the viewfinder frames.
I use "bitmap" viewfinder format, and for me YUV format would be more efficient to work with. "Direct" means the viewfinder transfers frames from the camera directly to the display memory at a location the client specifies.

So, as I can see, there is no way to get a sensor raw data stream (YUV or some other format, but not bitmap). Am I right?

    Hi,

As long as it doesn't HAVE to be viewfinder frames you should be OK. You should be able to get frames in YUV as part of the video capture interface of CCamera as I said.

Video capture via the camera interface (as opposed to say CVideoPlayerUtility) gives you individual video frames, straight from the camera. That should be what you want?

    Re: YUV capture from camera

    Sorcery,

    Yes, I think that's what I need.
I'll try to use video frames. I thought there is only one option to get frames - using a viewfinder.

There is one more question: How to draw things on the screen in this case? I draw some text and rectangles directly to the viewfinder bitmap at the moment, how to do this in the new approach?

    Thanks again!

    Re: YUV capture from camera

    Hi,

This is something you'd have to solve anyway - you can't draw YUV images to the screen.

You should be able to get viewfinder bitmaps and video frames at the same time - keep drawing the bitmaps and adding your graphics to the viewfinder and do your other processing on the video frames.

You'll just have to watch out for performance limitations.

    Hope that helps,

    Re: YUV capture from camera

Thanks, Sorcery, for your help. Didn't have time to answer to you earlier. Yes, it's working - I have YUV frames to process and ViewFinder frames to draw my graphics.
It's a pity it doesn't have screen layers - I would use direct view finder (to have view finder fps faster) and some user screen layer where I would draw my graphics...

    Thanks.

The direct viewfinder is generally not supported on recent S60 devices, only UIQ. However, look out for future Symbian releases which do in fact support "layers" (they call them graphics surfaces).
