    Which certificate?

    Hi,

I am just about to purchase a certificate to sign my Midlet (MIDP 2.0) suite. My question is simple:

Which certificate should I purchase to enable as many Nokia phones as possible?

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Which certificate?

    Thanks jappit,

Even though, your reply helped me in my decision, I really don't feel happy...

The bureaucracy and paranoia in MIDP signing is killing invention. What really puzzles me, is that I can't purchase a phone and decide what I want to install in it.

I just needed to get it out of me.

    Thanks again, jappit

    Re: Which certificate?

    Hi

Wouldn't the best way to handle this problem be the following: If a MIDlet is not trusted (signed) tell the user when it is installed.

But change the options so that the user can decide if he/she wants to be prompted once, always, never or not allowed as the user sees fit.

These options can not be changed by the application because of the sandbox.

Personally I belive certificates are a total screw up there are no global standards so even if you sign an application it is not guaranteed to work on all devices. There has to be a better way.

    Re: Which certificate?

There has been discussion that coming S60 devices will start using this kind of approach - although the menu will only contain the options available for that specific security domain and the menu will be shown the first time the permissions for that API is asked. Also I think new Sony Ericsson devices have this kind of menu.
