    optimize XML for mobile ajax

I am working on a WRT project where I have control over the xml feed.

What are some things I should do to optimize the xml so that it is most efficient for the client side parsing on series 60 phones?

I may also be able to use JSON, however I am not sure if the server side folks are familiar with this compared to XML.

JSON is a very good alternative as that means - basically - no parsing at all on the client side. But XML isn't a bad option either and there's not much you need to take into account due to the fact that you're on an S60 phone as opposed to PC/Mac browser. In fact as far as the programming goes everything is the same. The one thing that is different is that you have less bandwidth and the latency is much worse. That means that it would be a good idea to not use too verbose tags and attribute names. Also think about the granularity of AJAX calls. Plan your data so that you rather make few calls with more data than several small ones as latency is often a significant part of the total request-to-response time in mobile AJAX. The same principles applies to JSON.

About JSON, you find alot of libraries on its main site (http://www.json.org/), so there's really not a lot to worry about data serializing.
