What is an NFC tag (stupid question)?

    Hi there everyone.

I'm a little confused on this NFC / HF RFID subject. How can I know a certain tag (13.56) will be readable and usable under NFC protocols and associated hardware. I mean, is an NFC tag a special one? or just s simple 13.56 HF RFID tag?

    Cheers!!

    Juan

It is possible (in hardware) using an NFC-compatible device to communicate with any contactless tag supporting ISO-14443 (most proximity cards), since the modulation scheme and bit rates are supported in the standard specification.

NFC Forum have added more requirements to what the standard specifies. If you want to be certain that a tag is compatible, check if it is classified in the list of NFC Forum mandated tag types.

    Hey thanks a lot!

So basically, if I want to know if a tag provider is giving me the right products I just have to make sure they support ISO-14443. The rest of the NFC specifications (RTD-NDEF etc) are not burned on the tag?

Yes, ISO-14443 - or FeliCa (which is not built on top of this standard).
I am myself reading/writing MIFARE Standard 1k cards without using the NDEF/RTD formats using a Nokia 6131 NFC.

How are you able to read the tags? Is there a midlet available from Nokia?

There are tag listeners and connection interfaces available, there are example MIDlets in the Nokia 6131 SDK for example

Can an NFC device act like a NFC tag?
Can I make my NFC device act like a NFC tag when other NFC device discovers my NFC device?

Possibly. Depends on the manufacturer whether they've enabled it or not. For example, on the 6131nfc and 6212 you can make the internal Mifare card appear as an NFC tag by simply formatting it correctly. However, in other configurations it may not be possible - it depends whether the modem has an integrated smart card, or whether you can access the SE on the SIM card.

In many cases though you should be able to get the same effect by pushing NDEF over LLCP over NFCIP-1.

Is there any JAVA api to create a NFC tag?
How can I check in the device which type of NFC tag is embedded into it.?

If you have any sample application that detect the NFC tag among two NFC device. Plz upload it.

    Thanks

I think with S40 you can use the phone as tag (secure element) and with Symbian C7 it will come later.

About NFC tag: Memory structure for each are different and there are couple of bytes in the tags that tell reader what is the tag type. See the spec for tagg type in NFC forum
