RE: Recommended Sizes for MMS Image, Text and Layout

I have found UAPROFs a good source of information about handsets,
at least for the ones that have them :-)

Recommended Sizes for MMS Image, Text and Layout

We're developing a collection of MMS and wallpaper content to be sold for a variety of platforms (Series 30, Series 40 and Series 60). For best results, we are preparing different versions of each title to match the screen size and resolution of each platform.

It would be great if Nokia could provide a comprehensive matrix of recommended MMS Image, Text and Layout/background sizes for each of its platforms. Some Nokia guidelines recommend we leave room for one line of text to appear below the image, but that recommendation has not been fully extended to include all Nokia platforms. Ideally, that matrix could also include sizes for wallpapers, screensavers and color logos. Right now, we have to hunt all over the place for those specs, which do not always agree with each other.

In the meantime, could you please let us know if the MMS sizes below need to be revised in any way? We deduced those sizes based on documentation now available to us, but had to guess in a number of cases, deducting 20 pixels for the text region from the overall layout/background size.

    Thank you,

    mms layout/background = 92w x 34h
    3 resolutions: 1-bit b&w (when available); 2-bit gray; 8-bit color (256 colors)

    Size D - Sony Ericsson T68
    mms image = 101w x 60h
    mms layout/background = 101w x 80h
    8-bit color (256 colors)

    Size E - Nokia Series 40 (e.g.: 7210, 6610)
    mms image = 122w x 78h
    mms layout/background = 122w x 96h

    mms layout/background = 160w x 136h
    8-bit color (256 colors)

We are also making some full-screen MMS messages that do not leave room for a line of text. Those are done at the full mms layout/background size, typically with an animated GIF.

Comments welcome. If we all put our heads together on this, maybe we can help Nokia come up with a definitive list, which could save us all a lot of time in the future.

RE: Recommended Sizes for MMS Image, Text and Layout

    Hi,

We have noticed that there's a cap with these figures in our documentation and we will take an action in this issue. Actually, the information is available, but it's spreaded to the several documents.

    Series 60:
    - Max. image size for messaging is 174x136, or if you want to have the picture and associated image visible at the same time, 174x119. Wallpaper size is 174x132.

    Series 40:
    - Usable display area in messaging is 122x96. Wallpaper size is 128x128.

All Nokia phones with color screens uses 12-bit colors (4096 colors). At the moment Nokia terminals don't support separate backgrounds in MMS messages.

    Best regards,
    V / Forum Nokia

What about the regulation set by OMA? Below is an excerpt from the MMS Conformance document:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The still image coding formats to be used in MMS messages are:

    · base line JPEG with JFIF as the exchange format

    · GIF87a

    · GIF89a

    · WBMP

The maximum image resolution for which interoperability is guaranteed is 160x120 pixels.
