Netbeans and S60 Emulator - Failed to Initialize Session

I am trying to get the S60 Emulator to work but it fails to connect in the "Connect to Agent" step.

    I have the following installed:
    OS - Windows XP SP2
    Java - 1.6.0_05
IDE - Netbeans 6.1 with Mobility Pack
    SDK - S60_3rd_MIDP_SDK FP3

I have read many posts for this same error but I can't see a conclusive solution. The only thing I haven't tried is turning off the Windows XP Firewall. I have tried changing the timeout from 30000 to 60000 and still nothing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Re: Netbeans and S60 Emulator - Failed to Initialize Session

    Hello dpreta613,

    SDK - S60_3rd_MIDP_SDK FP3
Or do you mean S60_3rd_MIDP_SDK FP2?

Just to check with the basics: Within the Netbeans IDE, have you set the 'Device' from the Properties to S60 emulator?

    Regards,

Re: Netbeans and S60 Emulator - Failed to Initialize Session

    Hello r2j7,

Yes I meant S60_3rd_MIDP_SDK FP2 and yes I have set the Device to S60Emulator.

I have just tried to remove ActiveState Perl 5.10 and replaced it with Perl 5.6.1.635 which everyone seems to suggest. I then re-installed the S60 SDK and tried it again and still nothing. The emulator starts up and then disappears after 30 seconds or less. And finally the Connect to Agent step fails and I get the Symbian SDK Error dialog stating:

    Failed to initialize session
    ...
    java.lang.NullPointerException
    at com.symbian.tools.j2me.sei.emulator.session.RemoteSession$SocketTransport.getInputStream(RemoteSession.java:50)
    etc, etc.

    Thanks for the replying,
    dpreta613

    Aniello,

No I still not have been able to get this emulator working. I have used the Sony Ericsson SDK and emulator and they work fine.
I have tried all kinds of suggestions on this forum and nothing works.

    Hi,
I had the same problem, then followed step by step this wiki page and fixed.

I wish it works for you ;-)
    Good luck!

I don't think it's quite the same. So far I have these results, all with Netbeans 6.1 and Java 1.6.0_07:
    • S60_3rd_MIDP_SDK - Emulator comes up, but I don't (always?) see my code (just using samples so far).
    • S60_3rd_MIDP_SDK_FP1 - SDK failure, with nullPointerException. But if I wait a while, an emulator pops up. (so perhaps the delay mentioned by an earlier poster is appropriate, just gotta' find it in NetBeans).
    • S60_3rd_FP2_SDK_v1.1 - Emulator comes up, sample code (UIDemo) seems to work.

All the SDKs were downloaded from the Nokia download site within a couple of days of today, 8/8/08.

Now all of this sort of parallels my experiences with the different SDKs for Carbide.c++: original 3rd Edition SDK emulator is primative, but "works", FP1 SDK's emulator is *very* slow to start, and FP2 SDK's emulator works and is pretty snappy to start.

Of course, I now have *six* SDKs loaded, and since I'm doing both C++ and Java work, I'm a little concerned as to how I can make them interoperate when I'm debugging.

Slightly Off Topic (perhaps deserves a new topic?): Can I use the Eclipse that's part of Carbide.c++ if I decide to not use NetBeans, or do I need to install a version of Eclipse in addition to Carbide.c++ in order to use Eclipse as my Java IDE? When installing one of the SDKs (I think it was FP2's) it asked me if I'd like to install the Eclipse plugins, and I thought that would be good, but the installer didn't like any of my choices for where to put things. All I could find was "eclipsec.exe" in my Carbide.c++ v1.3 directory.

p.s.: searching for "debug timeout netbeans" in the NetBeans help offers what looks like a workable answer for part of my question. Unfortunately it looks like this is a per-project setting, and not a generic meta-setting.

    Hey guys,

    Maybe a little late becuause it's 2010.
Try switching your device to s60emulator instead of s60device.

    Grtz,

    Edward

Re: Netbeans and S60 Emulator - Failed to Initialize Session

    I finally found this thread.
Thanks a lot, this one fixed my problem.
I have no idea though how is my sound card related to the emulator..

(btw I use eclipse and not netbeans, and I have win7 sp1 32bit - so this might help a lot of people out!)
