    Hi
    I am unable to install a signed console app (got the sis file signed from here). After opening the sis file on my N82, and doing a continue....the installation starts (i get the progress bar) which finally fails saying (just!!) "unable to install !"

    That is usually an "Update error".
    Let us see the .pkg file.

    sorry for the delay hu...
    following is content of my .pkg (the exe is a simple console application which just logs the battery usage and time taken for each test case it runs on HTTP):-

    ; Installation file for Symbian OS 9.x for generic console application
    ; Installation file for TestHttp EXE
    ;
    ; This is an auto-generated PKG file by Carbide.
    ; This file uses variables specific to Carbide builds that will not work
    ; on command-line builds. If you want to use this generated PKG file from the
    ; command-line tools you will need to modify the variables with the appropriate
    ; values: $(EPOCROOT), $(PLATFORM), $(TARGET)
    ;

    ;
    ; UID is the exe's UID
    ;
    #{"hte EXE"},(0xE8000005),1,0,0

    Re: Unable to install on N82

    Are you sure about that you have changed to "Phone release (GCCE)" in the Project menu prior to creating the .sis file?
    Also note that a sole .exe file will not appear in the menu, you need to provide a registration file for that (you can find one in #2 of http://discussion.forum.nokia.com/fo...ad.php?t=96375 for example).

    Re: Unable to install on N82

    The installer is a strange entity, so it may also matter that the usual order of entries would be this
    Code:
    #{"hte EXE"},(0xE8000005),1,0,0

    ;moved
    ;[0x101f7961], 0, 0, 0, {"Series60v3.0"}

    ;Localised Vendor name
    %{"Vendor-EN"}

    ;Unique Vendor name
    :"Vendor"

    ;to here
    [0x101f7961], 0, 0, 0, {"Series60v3.0"}

    "$(EPOCROOT)Epoc32\release\$(PLATFORM)\$(TARGET)\hte.exe" -"!:\sys\bin\hte.exe"
    though I am absoultely not sure about that, makesis is pretty far from being smart, so it may matter.

    Yes it is phone release gcce in the project menu.

    Also, Do i need to create a separate project for creating the registration file? Can i package the registration along with my exe in the same sis file?

    Your UID line should be
    Code:
    UID 0 0xE8000005

    Read http://blogs.forum.nokia.com/blog/lu...symbian-signed. And then read the documentation of course.

    Re: Unable to install on N82

    Do you expect something to happen? What? And why did you chose a console application to start with?

    The way I see it the options are:
    - the application runs correctly but there is no UI so there's nothing to see;
    - the application has run correctly but there was no getch() at the end to keep it waiting for you to see the results;
    - the application has some problem and terminated unexpectedly (panic). If you suspect this look for "extended panic code" in the wiki.

    Re: Unable to install on N82

    The application should do the following three things:-

    1. write current progress to the console
    2. make http requests
    3. write log in a file

    do i need to do something different for a console app?

    From a technical point of view no. From a practical point of view you might consider the end-user needs, nobody will ever stand the look of a console on the mobile phone screen.

    For testing purposes it is fine though, make sure you debug the application and fix all the problems it might currently have.

    Re: Unable to install on N82

    The application runs fine on the emulator. I am trying this on FP1, and the exe runs fine - with the log getting created in \Epoc32\winscw\c.
    I installed the Y-Crash monitor, and with that i get the following issue:-

    Thread Name:
    Main
    Exit Category:
    Test Failed with
    Exit Type:
    Panic
    Exit Reason:
    -1

    I think i will have to debug this on the device, any other suggestion/tools?
