RE: What is a digital signature?

A digital signature is an electronic equivalent of signing a receipt and is intended to replace visual checks of ID cards, hand-written signatures and paper receipts. The Digital signature is required to fulfil the criterion of non-repudiation. The digital signature is executed in the WAP application security layer. It is specified in the existing WAP 1.2 specification and based on the WML Script Crypto Library. Legislation in many key countries such as the U.S., Germany and the U.K. has already been or is being developed regarding the acceptance of the digital signature as a legally binding transaction. Digital signature technology can fulfil the requirements of authentication and non-repudiation, which are key conditions in establishing the merits for legally binding commercial transactions.

A digital signature is initiated by a code embedded in a WAP page. In practice, digital signatures can be made by keying in the personal signing PIN. The user connects, for example, to the WAP shop and selects items to buy. After filling in the transaction details (payee, credit card number, etc.) using the mobile wallet, the browser displays the transaction details (SignText including date, amount, etc.) for approval. If everything is correct, the user digitally signs the transaction by entering the signing PIN. The browser display shows that the transaction was successful.

The signing PIN will be supplied with the SIM card which includes the security module. Mobile wallets, used alongside digital signatures, greatly improve security in mobile transactions, and are also convenient and easy to use.
