    Wink CELL ID Simple Question

I would like to write a LBS App

As far as I know, this could work with GPS or Cell ID, between others

I would like to use Cell ID

    The question is:
Does the Cell Phone Company Provider needs to add some kind of service in order to let me use Cell ID? Or it's actually free and the CellPhone Company doesn't even know that I'm asking my location to the nearest Radiobase station?

    Thank you =)

    Re: CELL ID Simple Question

    Hi aztroboy,

Cell ID - the id of the strongest signal base station, is available without any kind of service from the Company operator.
However, you can get only the id of the base station and not the name or the name of the location.

Check this article : How to get Cell id in J2ME ?

Thanx a lot! that would help a lot!

But it's still possible to know the longlats inside and regarding the Radio Base coverage area, right?

If you have a database of cell-id and corresponding GPS co-ordinates then its possible.

Moreover, it the cell-id differs from operator to operator. So you need databases of all operators

If you make a location based application, that interests any operator, and the operator might offer you support to access database of its cellids and corresponding base-station names - then its possible. ( I doubt, if operators have a database of cellid and corresponding co-ordinates)

Hi, I really appreciate your help man

    I just read this thread:

Must I S60 phones only in order to get Cell ID without any problem? Because S40 devices seem to be signed to the operator =(

Following what you said, It's better to contact the operator not only to get the access to all the BS it has (that would be a big help), but also to get the App to be signed for S40 devices =O. Is that right?

Signing is not needed for S60 devices as this article indicates.

The article mentions the following quoted.

Note: In Series 40 devices the MIDlet needs to be signed to a manufacturer or operator domain; otherwise the property will be null.
