Activation key problem - char encoding

    Hello,

some users of my application got problems with activation key. How can I make it compatible for every device?
If I change their user ID, so that there are no spaces, dashes, capitols, etc... and then I generate the activation key, then it works on the most devices.
I let them enter 1 string for user ID and 1 string for activation key. Then I break the first string to chars and calculate the activation key.
Then I put the new chars together again and create the string, which should be compared with the string they entered.
What could be the problem and how can I solve it? Its not country specific, but device specific.
    Thanks

    Hi Rambajzek,

I'm not sure to have clearly understood your problem. Could you post some real examples of Strings that cause the problem, and some other that do not? Also, on which devices are you having these issues?

Re: Activation key problem - char encoding

I got some reports from N95 users, I am not sure about other models, I must look in the files and post it later.

Strings like this dont work on some devices:

    "34-567-890-3244", or "Peter Smith"

Strings like this work for 99 percent of devices:

    "ianmartin"

I have to make it all lower case and delete all spaces, but sometimes even it doesnt work.

Could it be that they just make mistakes in entering the strings?
But why would be there more reports from N95 users?

With this little information it is hard to say anything specific.

And why more reports from N95 users?
    a) coincidence
    b) there are more users of your app on N95 to start with
    c) some other reason

I my opinion I would use no spaces in the activation key and make the matching case insensitive, as the keypad input on phones makes it harder to input strings with special chartacters and different cases.

How to get Log file from users?

I also dont have more information from users.

How could I create log file on users device? Which information should it contain and what would be the easiest way to send me the log file? Output in text box, then copy and paste to email?

Re: How to get Log file from users?

    Hi Rambajzek,

the easiest way could be to send your log files to a server via an HTTP request, so your application would not require any further steps from users. If you do not want your users to use network, then you can use the approach you described (so, show logs in application and send them by email).

About log contents, I think you should try to log this data:
    * the user ID entered by user
    * the activation key entered by user
    * the activation key calculated by your application
    * if you have any intermediate strings in your calculation process, these could be useful too to spot out where the problem lies
