    J2ME and SYmbian on SMS

    Hi,

Actually, I also brought this question to seek help from Java forum as well. Hope end of the day, I can have some information.

I remember there is an article mentioned about we can have a J2ME application, make use of local host, send the message to a port of the phone, and the Symbian application will listen to that port and pickup the message, process whatsoever.

Can anyone know more about this process, at least from Symbian side?

    Thanks a lot,

Re: J2ME and SYmbian on SMS

Will tell you from both sides:

    1. J2ME application running on Java phones or even Symbian phones:
the application can register to a port and any incoming message on that port will open the application with the message.

    2. Symbian application: There is no difference, which ever port is selected, only it should not be registered with any other J2me application.
Any running application can get notifications on any incoming SMS and read it and do what it wants to...

    Hi,
As Amit already mentioned that you should have a dedicated port for your J2ME application with Symbian side also so that there is no conflict between the two process during communication.
I have tried one such application for telephony which was having a UI on J2ME while the engine was a dll in Symbian C++ .I was sending various commands from J2ME side through a common port on which my dll was listening and the response was sent back to J2ME application on separate port through my dll interface.

    Hi,

thanks for reply. Maybe I was not clear enough.

we developed an J2ME application which sends out the messages. and as you may know, the j2me application sends message without indicating delivery report.
So, we need to extend it to symbian C++ application, by instead of sending messages directly from J2ME app., we send it to "somewhere", the symbian C++ app. listen to that, and in turn it sends out the messages.

Would you have any examples of this?

Anyway, the smshandler from wiki for Symbian S60's certificate is expired..Do we have another?

    Thanks all

Re: J2ME and SYmbian on SMS

then as said by yogan, use symbian to j2me talking and do the job...

    as he said:
I was sending various commands from J2ME side through a common port on which my dll was listening and the response was sent back to J2ME application on separate port through my dll interface.
about smsHandler, I haven't used it, we have written the code to handle SMS oursleves...

    Hi,
What is the help that you are looking for?? From Symbian side you will need to implement your functionality and to pass the output you will need to use socket apis to communicate with your J2ME application.
If you want to know how to start working with Symbian there is quite lot of documentation available now in Wiki.
    Let's start with this link

In case of any help do post it Happy programming...

    Hi,

    Thanks yogpan,

I know its abit ridiculous to ask this. Do we have a ready application (like smshandler)?. Because we are in due time and not going to spend time or resource to develop Symbian C++ application.

    Thanks again

    Hi tieutue,

Just to know whether you are having the j2me application and the symbian c++ implementation on the same phone and you want to communicate on the same device then I guess you are on the right track. If you are planning to have it on different devices then I guess you need take a different path.
And coming to smshandler class here is the link http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.php/SMS_Operations
