Unhappy S60 5th Edition Emulator Crashes

    Installed S60 5th Edition SDK v0.9
When starting emulator (either as stand-alone application or from any IDE) it crashes without even displaying its window!
    System:
    Athlon X64 M2, 2Gb RAM
    WindowsXP X64

All other SDKs and IDEs are working all right on this system!

You should check if the logfile (http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.php/Epocwind.out) contains something.

Emulator writes nothing into the file.
Wiki says: "For the file to be created, "Enable EPOCWIND.OUT logging" must be enabled under the C++ Debug tab of the preferences dialog of the emulator window."
But emulator crashes before the window is created, so I have no chance to invoke the preferences dialog!

Check if epoc32\data\epoc.ini contains the line "LogToFile 1" (this is the setting which enables epocwind.out), actually it is there in my S60 5th installation by default.

Yeah. I have that line in the epoc.ini but emulator writes nothing to the file. It seems it crashes before logging is started.

The emulator "crashes same"? What do you mean? There is no clear description of the problem in the posts above and you're not providing one either? Was your crash related to the sound system? If yes, how do you know that? If not[sure] why do you expect for the above solution to work?

Have you disabled DEP as suggested in S60 SDK and tools on Windows Vista - a success story?

Re: S60 5th Edition Emulator Crashes

The post is just a guide on how to install the tools, it should apply equally well to all SDKs. My most recent post shows installation of S60 5th Edition SDK on Windows 7, following virtually the same procedure.

If the emulator does not start you have to figure out why. Look for the epocwind.out file in the %TEMP% directory of your Windows installation and try to identify what type of error are you dealing with.

For the error mentioned in my post the solution was to disable Windows's DEP. For other error there might be other solutions (like disabling some drivers ...)

I found I have such problem, when installed on WinXP VirtualPC. Reboot solves the problem.
