    Nokia WAP stack support questions.

some questions on Nokia's roadmap for WAP 1.x and 2.x support. Thanks.

    1. Will future Nokia phones offer dual-stack support i.e WAP 1.x and 2.x?
    2. Is WAP 2.x stack support equivalent to TCP/IP stack support? If not, are the phones with WAP 2.x support further classified as supporting TCP/IP stack and WAP/WSP stack? What is Nokia's implementation in this regard?
    3. If a WAP device supports TCP/IP stack, what is the function of a WAP gateway in this scenario?
(assuming "gateway" by definition performs protocol translation)
    4. How does a WAP gateway determine which user agent supports WAP 1.x, WAP 2.x, WAP/WSP stack, TCP/IP stack? Does it rely solely on UAProf?

RE: Nokia WAP stack support questions.

Currently launched WAP 2.0 compatible Nokia phones have dualmode browser, which supports XHTML Mobile Profile with WAP CSS and WML 1.x. So far, Nokia has launched one terminal (Nokia 5100 for Americas) which supports XHTML MP over TCP/IP. What comes to future implementations of products, which have not been publicly launched, unfortunately we can not comment on those.

Even though WAP stack will eventually be replaced with TCP/IP stack and there is no need for any kind of encoding of XHTML content, WAP gateway will still be an important element in the network. It will be used as control point enabling various kind of services, such as subscriber profiling, service profiling, caching and content opitimization for terminal capabilities.

Hopefully I was able to help.

    Kind regards,
