    General WAP Question

    I am new to these type of technologies and I'm wondering how different Mobile Network Generations affect WAP applications. In other words what advantages would the 3G Mobile phone network have over 2 1/2G Network in terms of speed

    Here are the expected theoretical speeds:
    GSM (CSD) ==> 9.6 to 14.4 kbps
    GSM HCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data) ==> up to to 57.6 kbps
    GPRS ==> up to 171 kbps
    EDGE ==> up to 470 kbps
    WCDMA(UMTS) ==> up to 2 Mbps
    CDMA2000 1xRTT ==> up to 307 kbps
    CDMA2000 3xRTT ==> up to (and to exceed) 2 Mbps

    However, remember that the actual data rate that users experience will depend on each carriers network implementation, amount of network traffic, and regional singal quality due to terrain. In reality, the theoretical speeds have been a bit optimistic. GPRS has been more like 30-50 kbps and EDGE more like 120-140 kbps in deployed network use so far.
