i've discovered tat we cant use ports other than 80 or protocol other than http

have any one here tried making an application on mobile which uses GPRS for remote connection other than port 80

    Hi,

sure you can use any port and any protocol. The problem might be some firewall rules in your MNO network.

Also the sentence "i've discovered tat we cant use ports other than 80 or protocol other than http" is not clear - how you discoverd it?, what happend?, what were symptoms that lead you to decision that you are limited to the HTTP and port 80?

    Thank you for responding.
    My case is as follows
I am willing to develop a multi-player game for smartphone enabled handset which will require tcp/ip for communication to and fro from server

I began with the first step and developed a network testing module in j2me i found out that it takes only http protocol works and the socket protocol fails

Java Code fragment is as follows :-
    StreamConnection socket = (StreamConnection)Connector.open("http://44.252.210.143:80");

For debugging purpose i bifurcated above address in protocol,ip,port and take inputs at runtime and i tested the following cases
    1. Left the protocol empty and provided ip and port inputs as above
RESULT :- I got an erro invalid address

    2. I gave http protocol
RESULT :- it successfully performed connection operation and my servers caught the connection request and displayed me connection request

    3. after succeeding in http connection i replaced http with socket
RESULT :- it took long time and cause the error "Symbian OS error -33 : Operation timedout "

    4. i changed my server from http server to tcp server and then made a request from client, ofcourse via http protocol as socket protocol gives timeout error
RESULT :- tcp server catches the request but as the request is an http request cant gain the persistent functionality so concluded tat i need to research more whether tcp/ip communication is possible on mobile or not. meanwhile, i m thinking of making a http middleware between my server and mobile client

    SYMBIAN OS Case
    1. Tried one of the symbian s60 sdk s60cppexample application to test whether it is possible through symbian or not The chat example in s60cppexample fails to connect to a given ip address on port 5005
    giving error 33
    but, works fine on emulator

According to my exploration in my network setting there should be no firewall problem

i hope i have described my problem in detail

Need help please take the pain of reading this long description
i appreciate the consideration of my problem.
