    Communication with a PC

I'm planning to design a system in which a phone communicates with my PC to exchange information. The computer will have a program running in the background that recieves a data request and sends the info back to the phone. What kind of Socket API would be best for programming the PC to communicate with a phone over the internet?

Use HTTP (and a web server on your PC).

    Could you be more specific?

    Re: Communication with a PC

Install a web server on your PC.
Create the application that runs on the PC and responds to web/HTTP requests.
Create the application that runs on the phone and uses HTTP to communicate with the server application (sends and receives data over HTTP requests/responses).

For the phone side, pick the phones you wish your app to work on, and then choose the languages you can use for writing the app for those devices (for S40: Java; for S60: Java, Symbian C++ or Python for S60). See the HTTP client examples in the relevant SDKs, wiki, etc.

For the PC side, pick the tools you wish to use on that side (PHP, Python, J2EE, .NET, whatever you're familiar with or wish to learn for PC side web development). The Internet is full of information about that.

If you don't wish to use HTTP, you can go a step lower and use TCP socket calls.
