Restrictions to access SIM ToolKit (S40)

    Hi,

I am exploring an application idea - I am wondering if there is any restrictions for S40 J2ME applications to access services from the SIM card. Can I easily find out:

    1) Which S40 phones support sending JSR-177 ADPU commands?
    2) Do these applications need to be certified in a specific way (operator or manufacturer domain)?
    3) How do we get in touch for operator or manufacturer certification? What are the test and commercial criteria to have a J2ME app certified by Nokia?

And additionally, if you are really talking about accessing the SIM Application Toolkit on the SIM card, normal trusted 3rd party signing is not enough. You need to get your MIDlet signed by the operator.

Re: Restrictions to access SIM ToolKit (S40)

    Hi Hartti,

Thanks for the clear statement - I have some further questions:

    1) Would it work also if it is signed in the manufacturer domain?
    2) Is there any good place to find information about test criteria for operator or manufacturer signing?

If there are only a few phones which support JSR-177 APDU, would it be possible to support more phones if I write an STK applet which is installed on the SIM card instead of a J2ME midlet which is installed on the phone? Or can there also be incompatibilities between the phone and the SIM card, e.g. the phone does not support sending a SMS when the SIM card STK applet instructs the phone to do so. If I look at websites like Gemalto they claim STK applets will work on any phone with Telecommunication SIM cards, i.e. own Gemalto cards. They do not make any statement for 3rd party developer about operator SIM cards which are already in the field (except for the fact that operators can update these cards OTA).

Re: Restrictions to access SIM ToolKit (S40)

1&2) Does not really matter (please, check the SATSA spec, my recollection is that only operator certificate is mentioned in there), as Nokia's manufacturer signing requirements are so strict that in 99.99% of the cases manufacturer signing is not possible. In Nokia's case the application has to developed by Nokia or for Nokia (Nokia branded that is). Other manufacturers might have different requirements though.
