    Serial Connection through phone USB

    Hello,

I'd like to control some hardware through the USB connection of my Nokia 5220 from J2ME. I assume that the phone USB is implemented as a USB slave and therefore expects a USB host to be connected, with all the associated handshaking, before it can send any data. Is it possible to get a serial data stream from the phone without implementing a USB host on the other end?

To phrase this another way, what is the simplest form of hardware needed to get serial data from the phone?

    Many thanks,

    Martyn Fogg

Re: Serial Connection through phone USB

Hi hope this article will help u.
    http://www.forum.nokia.com/info/sw.n..._v1_0.zip.html

And it works. U can read the data u write to the USB port using PC. But using a microcontroller it is quite difficult task.
According to my knowledge mobile phone USB is a slave device. So it cannot talk to another slave device. U can use some superior PIC which support USB host modes. And MAX3421E is a USB host controller from maxim http://www.maxim-ic.com/quick_view2.cfm/qv_pk/3639

And this may answer to ur question

For devices which support USB OTG, two slave devices can talk to each other.

Re: Serial Connection through phone USB

    Hello,

Many thanks for the replies. So it looks as if, for the phone I am using at the moment at least, I would need to implement a USB host in hardware. Since my software skills are better than my hardware skills I'll be better off using a microcontroller at this stage. Might look into a USB enabled PIC though, as you suggested.

Seems a shame though, modern phones have all that lovely built in hardware, like Bluetooth, sound, displays, internet connectivity, messaging etc, and run Java to control it all, but are difficult to interface to.

    Thanks for your help,

    Martyn

lsouza first of all, you need a USB software stack. No way around that. Then it depends on which service you want to use. A common one is the internet modem which is based on USB CDC WMC specification. This is a lot of coding or you find off the shelf product(s).

Therefore, consider to use an old mobile phone with RS-232 interface or Bluetooth.

Re: Serial Connection through phone USB

    Succeeded in doing what, specifically?

If you want to connect your phone to some kind of USB peripheral, then you should read the discussion in this thread, and the various articles linked from here. In general, no, it is not possible.

Perhaps if you tell us what device you want to use (make and model), and to what device you want to connect it, there might be some additional advice.
